INCREASED(!) sex drive?

Posted by knicknack55 on February 9, 2005, at 9:27:03

Hi all-

has anyone had either zoloft (25mg) or trazodone (50mg) or the combination actually increase their sex drive as opposed to decrease it? I was really worried about starting an SSRI because my sex drive is already about as low as it can go, but after about a week on this combination I started being really horny all the time. Not that I'm complaining, but I'm wondering if this is normal, and which medicine it might be, so that I can keep taking it forever. haha!

i dont think it increased your libido -

Trazodone is an antagonist of alpha1 receptor (downregulates) and relaxes smooth muscles.
This can improve ability to have an erection.
Rarely it can cause priapism.

Perhaps the increased libido was an effect of the antidepressive action of trazodone.

Trazodone also delays ejaculation like most antidepressives.

Do you have this?

well, i'm a woman, so no erections, but I haven't noticed any more difficulty (or ease) achieving orgasm than usual.

what I have noticed is that I get 'in the mood' at the slightest little thing, whereas before it took a large amount of foreplay. Also don't need lube anymore. I even have been initiating sex, which i've never done in my life.

oh, i beg you pardon. if you want to find out which drug is causing that you can take trazodone alone and look what happens. How much is your dosis of trazodone per day?

I'm on 50mg trazodone and just 25 of zoloft. When the doc put me on 50 of zoloft I didn't do very well, and it seemed the effect went away. But that may just have been because I was so tired I could hardly stand up straight.

do you think the antidepressive and perhaps anxiolytic effects are primarely due to trazodone?

I'm not sure. I didn't start them at the same time, but the 25mg of zoloft made me jittery while the 50 made me sleepy and a zombie. After 2 weeks on the zoloft I felt like i could think critically and was doing really well, and i was excited about it. But, 2 weeks, the doc put me on 50 and I just crashed. I guess i started taking the trazodone about 4 days into the zoloft (couldn't sleep).

I suspect the libido thing is the trazodone though, since zoloft is known for the opposite effect...

I once took 50mg trazodone for six days and it definately improved ability to have erections. But the effect on libido i dont know. Trazodone delayed ejaculaton, but not as strong as other ssris. Perhaps this could go away with time. Many people take trazodone as sleeping pill and they rarely say it would delay ejaculation. Maybe I should have taken the drug longer than six days to achieve better libido...

Thank you for your experience.

i now have retaken 50mg trazodone for 4 days and there is definately a pro libido/erection effect (could have 5 times copulation per day). It could perhaps have a pro effect for people who must take sildenafil. A much cheaper alternative.
It seems to have some weak antidepressive properties after 4 days. It is also marketed as anxiolytic agent but I doubt it is that strong.
Unfortunately my concentration with this drug is impaired (thoughts comming and going...)and there are some muscle twitchs of m. pectoralis and biceps sometimes.
