No sleep

Posted by alienatari on January 26, 2005, at 5:58:16

Hey all. As you know im on Parnate, and anyway apart from my 5-7pm
lay-down where i dont actually sleep, and my "i feel like i want to
vomit" feeling from about 4-6pm (now cured with a low dose of
Ativan) I am finding it soooooo hard to sleep. In the past I have
used Xanax to sleep. Im taking about 1.5mgs of Xanax and I still
cant sleep. Im getting to sleep at around 3:30am and University
starts soon so im getting worried. I want to get this sorted out
before then. I also take my Parnate pretty early. One dose when I
wake up at around 10am the next dose at 2pm.

What I use to use with great success was Seroquel. I was on it as an
antipsychotic/moodstabaliser with my Epilim (Depakote) as I have
Bipolar I disorder, and at 800mgs of Sereoquel I would have a great
sleep but would feel pretty yuk in the morning. Seroquel started to
make my throat close up so i had to stop taking it.

Now im looking for something new that i can suggest to my
psychatrist for sleep. I am out of answers. The only things I can
think of are Stilnox (Ambien), which use to work on me at one point but I
dont know if that is compatible with Parnate, and Melatonin and
again, ive never taken that and I dont know if its compatible with
Parnate.

Anyone have any suggestions on what they take to help them get to
sleep? My friend who is bipolar takes 5mgs of Thorazine to sleep and
finds that works great (hey i might get my thorazine afterall lol)
but I doubt my doc will perscribe this.

Thanks and take care
Chris.

Melatonin usually doesn't work very well after a while if you take it every night.

You should check to see if Ambien is ok with your other drugs. A new sleep drug will be on the market in a few weeks. It works better than Ambien since it both puts you to sleep, and also keeps you sleeping. It also works on a long term basis without losing efficacy. It also appears to improve one's mood. It's called Lunesta in the US.

Hi
I am bipolar too and take Parnate. I suffer from insomnia as well but not from the parnate. I take 25mgs of thorazine when I can't sleep. Did you know that thorazine is actually indicated for bipolar disorder? I find it excellent as it does not knock me out cold and I don't wake feeling hungover or like I have fur growing on my tongue. And the calm feeling stays with me all day.

Ambien will probably work for about 2 nights then stop working. That is what it did with me and I have heard the same from others.

Good luck and try to get the thorazine. Beside, thorazine can be your emergency pill for Parnate should you need it. Why don't you think your doctor won't give it to you?

Thank you for the info. After what you have just said and what was recommended for me in the MAOI yahoo group for hyptertensive crisis i really hope my doctor gives me a low dose of thorazine. My friend who is bipolar takes it for sleep and says it great. I also have read that its great for nausea and im taking Ativan at the moment for nausea that is being caused by the parnate. Only problem im concerned with in regard to thorazine is tardive dyskinesia as I have developed early signs of it on one atypical antipsychotic (Solian) that I was taking before. They went away after stopping the drug thank God.

I hope he doesnt want me to try Seroquel again. I never want to touch that stuff again. It was great for my mood and paranoia and all but yea I think im possibly allergic to it.

Take care
Chris.

Thats great, thanks for the info. I might solve two probs with the one drug. Id like to be able to stop the Ativan, though its so effective for me in regard to nausea.

Take care.

I take Parante, and I currently have no insomnia at 200mg/day + 25mg seroquel at night. I finally eliminated all traces of insomnia by, oddly enough, switching it so that I take 50mg every 5-6 hours (including a bedtime dose). Insomnia got BETTER, not worse, once I went above around 120mg/day.

Re: No sleep-Try Restoril

Restoril (30 mg capsules) works great for me. It reduces anxiety as well. Valium (10 mg tablets) is also effective in getting deep, restful sleep.

Just make sure you don't become dependent on them as tolerance can develop rather quickly (especially on the Restoril).
