Night Terror

Posted by mmcconathy on January 15, 2005, at 22:58:59

I have been having disturbing periods during the night where i feel as if im being murdered by an unknown presense in the room. I thought they were nightmares.

My pdoc has told me these are night terrors, but only usally happen with children.

Night terror differ from nightmares becuase of sleep paralysis, i'm waken but cannot move and disturbing images haunt me for the period of time until i can get my toes or fingers moving.

Please tell me if somekind of medication can stop this.

hey i cant give u the magic answer, but when i was on effexor i had night terrors that i never had before. I would get up soaked in sweat and then write down my nightmare so i could keep a log. Finally they stopped, but I also changed meds and I dont recall if it was when i changed from effexor to paxil or not. now, im on prozac and havent had any disturbing dreams..what meds are u on?

I was on Wellbutrin 300mg, which gave me VIVID dreams, they were actually cool, i do any thing, make my own skyscaper and me the big CEO, but then they stoped being so cool....

I got in to some spiritual stuff i think i shouldnt have,....... that may have started some of this.

But anyays....... that doesnt have anything to do with this anway.

I'm off it now, for about 6 days.

I hope they go away

I think they will. If you are getting off meds, its prob. just the chemicals still in your brain. Those terrors scared the crap out of me too. But, I dont have them now..it only lasted a short time.
Good Luck and know they will stop.....

I had night terrors as a child and teenager, and have had a few as an adult but not as many. I actually never thought about trying to find a medication to make it stop, so I don't know if there is one. It is 100 times worse than a simple nightmare in my opinion, because it seems like its really happening to you and that you just can't make yourself wake up to stop it, or even move. I know this isn't much help with your question, but I know what its like to suffer through those.

Hi

I've been on Lamictal and ever since, have had one or two night terrors a month.
It really is terrifying while it is happening. Just last night I had one. Usually there is a dark face looming over me or a large dark presence in the room. ONe time I thought a huge dog entered my room. Just as they appear I gasp and bam, they're gone.
My pdoc says they are hallucinations.
I never had them until I started the Lamictal.

Hi.

How often do these 'night terrors' occur, and do they occur right after you fall asleep?

If they are what are commonly known as night terrors, then your dr. is correct in saying they occur most often in children, but they are not typically accompanied by sleep paralysis.

I don't know what you would call this, but this am when waking up I heard my husband say something like "Let's talk". He was still asleep! Was this a dream or a hallucination. i just started on l50mg of Wellbutrin. Phillipa

I wish that was true, but he sleeps on the other side of the bed. I really heard it from the other side. I hope this new wellbutrin isn't making me psychotic. I never have been. Just super anxious. Phillipa

I doubt it's making you psychotic. It might have given you a hypnopompic hallucination (hallucination that persists after waking). If you start having them constantly, you might have to change your med, that's all. it's not medically serious, in and of itself.

I've never heard of this. Do you work in a medically related field? There are so many knowledgeable people here, and I'm always amazed at what their career is. Thanks, Phillipa

This might help...if you got involved in anything of the occult world ( you said "spiritual stuff") then you might have a possible explanation for the "presence" in your room.

If you are interested in following up on this....let meknow and we can discuss it in Social or Faith Babble.

hello there, chemist here: without even reading the informed and helpful replies to your post, i am going to go out on a limb and suggest you stop taking the medication. what do you think? sound like a good idea, what with the paralysis, murderous presence, night terrors, and so forth? just an observation....all the best, chemist

I don't work in a medically related field, I just have a lot of bizarre sleep-related symptoms and I've read a couple of books on sleep by noted authorities.

Many times, because of the body-mind-soul connection that makes up our being, one area can overlap the other. Anti-depressants can have side effects that can cause medical symptoms...and yet to totally discount the spiritual side of our nature would be naive.

I have counseled with many who's troubles began
after some semmingless harmless interaction with the spirit world.
Going to their MD...they have often been prescribed medicine to deal with the problem. Sometimes ( not all) the medicine complicates an already complex issue.
We must realize that we have 3 parts....a body...a mind..and a soul.

Applying spiritual solutions to a real medical problem often doesnt work.
Trying to apply AD's and other medical solutions to a spiritual problem, doesnt work either.
Get my point?

If I fall and break my leg...I of course would pray, but I would want taken to the Doctor to set the bone.

If I stumbled into a spiritual problem...I would seek out the help of an expert in that field...a God called minister of the gospel, for instance.

If I have emotional problems like depression...then I would seek out a professional in that area also.

hope this helps

BF
