Marplan experiences--anyone?

Posted by cubbybear on January 20, 2005, at 21:14:18

Have had great success with parnate for two decades, but in the event I'd ever have to switch to another MAOI, I get the feeling that Marplan would be a better choice for me than Nardil. I'd like to hear from anyone (such as Ilene!) who can talk about Marplan re: side effects, effect on libido, weight gain/loss, anything you care to tell.

Thanks!

You won't find many people who have taken it ... maybe some people in Canada or the UK.

I have a copy of a document that I obtained on-line showing that Marplan has long been approved by the FDA for use in the U.S. It doesn't matter to me if only 10 people have tried it. If it's freely available, and the majority of those 10 people report positive experiences with it, then that's good enough for me.
Conversely, if it's available in the U.S., but all the replies happen to come from Canada or the U.K., that won't affect my decision either, as long as the reports are mostly positive.

I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to stop you from pursuing Marplan. It's just that when I lived in D.C. two years ago my doctor wasn't able to get it and so that is why we went with Parnate. You might want to check with pharmacies in your area to see if you can obtain it.

Good luck in your quest.

Fortunately, it's not even a definite thing that I'll someday want to try Marplan. But I'm the kind who likes to do plenty of homework in advance, just in case. As I've always said, I've been relying on Parnate for 20 years. Just this past week, my anxiety was very bad so I got to thinking, "what if the Parnate was pooping out?" I spoke to my former pdoc in New York and raised the question of poopout. He also concurred that the Parnate was still doing its job, but if I'd ever want/have to switch, I would do so with another AD in the MAOI class. After looking at some comparisons, I thought that Marplan would be better than Nardil for me.
I guess most people would leave decisions about what drug to switch to, to the last minute, after one drug failed, and . . .some people might think I was junping the gun, but I always like to know about viable alternatives ahead of time.

Hi

You can do search and use the word "Marplan success" and many threads will pop up ... I just checked.

Hi Cubbybear,

If you don't find enough info here, you might try searching on the Yahoo MAOI group:

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/maois/

The only problem is that you don't get to search the whole database there. You have to search a range of posts at a time. I remember reading something very positive about Marplan there in the last few weeks.

Do you mind if I ask you if you've had any hypertensive crises on Parnate? I would think it would be very difficult to follow the diet while living in Thailand.

Also, regarding an earlier conversation we had about purchasing Parnate from Costco, are you certain that they make you buy really large quantities? If you go to their website, they quote prices for 30 or 50 or 100 (10 mg.) pills.

I've never had a hypertensive crisis because I've always been quite careful. As for your question on Thai food, it is very difficult to find (good) cheese here since Asians generally do not eat or like cheese. Thre are plenty of soy products around, but since I never had any desire to eat them, this is not an issue with me. None of the foods in the typical Thai diet are on the MAOI limitation list (except for soy extracts, or whatever it is they eat from soy).

No maybe you misunderstood or I wasn't clear on this. It is *I* who always buys the large quantities, like 1000 pills at a time, for a one-year-supply to bring back here. I've never been a Costco member or any of the other companies like it. I guess it doesn't pay to be a member of Costco, if I visit the U.S. for only 1 or 2 weeks a year, don't you think?

The only break in price that I can get is from Walgreens, at about 11% off their regular price, because of my age. It is applicable to customers in Arizona, and I simply use my mother's address. I don't know how Walgreens bottom line would compare to Costco.

That's very encouraging. Helps me to get up the courage to someday try Parnate.

Yes, I definitely misunderstood you and I agree that it probably doesn't make sense to join Costco for one two-week period.

Take care and I hope that the Parnate continues to work well for you.
