Best anti-depressant for chronic dysthymia???

Posted by sac on January 18, 2005, at 19:16:15

Does anyone know an effective anti-depressant for chronic dysthymia? I'm bipolar II and have tried numerous med combinations. Currently I take Eskalith and Prozac 20mg/day. The lithium has helped to stabilize me, but I have been battling a sort of low-grade chronic depression for years and this is not helped by the Prozac. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Perhaps a tryciclic would be a good try. Desipramine, imipramine, clomipramine ??

Possible solutions ....

Add lamictal
Change prozac to nortriptyline
Change prozac to parnate
Add Wellbutrin
Exercise
Add Stimulant

The safest and most fruitful advise would be either try lamictal or add wellbutrin.

Hope your better soon!

Thank you both for your quick response. I've been on Lamictal in the past for about 2 years and had minimal success but quit for other reasons. The only tricyclic I've tried is imipramine and yes it did help boost my mood but I started cycling with mood swings. Perhaps the nortrip is the better way to go. I have tried Wellbutrin in the past and felt very anxious on the 150 mg. SR so I had to back it down to 100 and then to 50 mg (I split the tablet). I do recall feeling better even with this little bit of Wellbutrin but I just couldn't get to a higher dose without feeling this awful anxiety. Any experience with that?
In addition, I do exercise, never tried parnate because of the dietary restrictions...I'm too scared. I've only tried Ritalin in the past and it definately gave me a boost, but I crashed badly and had to get off that roller coaster. Thanks so much for your suggestions. I may give Wellbutrin another go. -Stacey

I would increase the Prozac dose since 20 mg is only a starting dose. I would then try adding a stimulant such as Adderal or Ritalin. another option might be Provigil.
