Possible to get driving licinse despite ADHD?!

Posted by Ted Brosnan on November 3, 2004, at 12:04:50

Hello. I am 22 years old. I am waiting now for my appointment with a neuropsychologist to decide whether I have ADD or ADHD.

I just can't believe it. I am in a state of denial despite that many aspects of my current adult functioning suit perfectly the pattern of adult ADD/ADHD. I don't have too many recollections of my childhood. But I have heard my mother talking about the way I didn't like the activites other kids at kindergarden engaged in, like singing. I have always had disciplne problems. It might be that ringing my mom would help elicit some symptoms of ADHD I had while been young.

I just can't understand how this professional can go back in time? I mean I really don't have memories of it at young age. Would he ask rather very specific questions that would indicate ADHD and that I would be able to remember and answer?! And say "oh yeah I had that" ?!

How could I have gotten my driving licinse last year then?! Is it possible for an adult ADD/ADHD patient to be able to learn to drive and to get the lap?!!

I know that I had (not driving now) difficulties paying attention to important aspects of the road and trafic. It was just like pushing the lever down and driving..... I am still affraid of driving a car because I know (when I compare myself to mates, brother and my dad) that I just can't see things that they see on the road.

But on the day I had the test, I just had good concentration level to the degree that allowed a positive result.

Any comments would be greatly helpful.
Thanks a lot:)
Ted.

I have had many similar thoughts, or reservations rather about driving, considering the implications of being inattentive at the wheel. Prior to my being dx'd I would run red lights on an almost daily basis without even being aware of it, just looking over and seeing the passenger white as a ghost and not knowing what was up! Pretty alarming! That considered, I am quite fortunate that of my 5 accidents only one involved another vehicle. All the others were due to impulsivity (Racing, etc..) or just bad luck. Just being aware of the problem helps a ton! You are absolutely right to be concerned with driving abilities with ADHD. Consider medication, my record has been a clean slate since I started adderall. Good luck!

Matt

Hello Ted....
Personally, I don't drive because of anxiety. I did have a few lessons but it made me nervous so I couldn't concentrate. I once had a lesson after i'd taken a Valium and my instructor said I drove better than ever before!! (Please can no one give me a lecture about drugs and driving, I know it's not a good idea and I never did it again).

Ted, perhaps Parnate would improve your ADHD symptoms and your anxiety. What do you think?

Hi mate! I know that a MAOI esp Parnate in this case can help both the AvPD and ADD/ADHD.

But I want to try the other options first. I still haven't got an official ADD diagnosis.

Still wondering. Would a stimulant like Ritalin or d-amphetamine make my SA worse? or would it make me pro socail?!

Thanks.

The effect of stimulants seems to be very variable in SA. Some people find that stimulants give them a confidence boost whereas others respond by having a panic attack or by getting paranoid. It might be a good idea to avoid stimulants until you've got your anxiety under control.

Sure you can, unless you already have one and lost all your points. In fact I am ADHD and almost have my pilots license.
