I have had many similar thoughts, or reservations rather about driving, considering the implications of being inattentive at the wheel. Prior to my being dx'd I would run red lights on an almost daily basis without even being aware of it, just looking over and seeing the passenger white as a ghost and not knowing what was up! Pretty alarming! That considered, I am quite fortunate that of my 5 accidents only one involved another vehicle. All the others were due to impulsivity (Racing, etc..) or just bad luck. Just being aware of the problem helps a ton! You are absolutely right to be concerned with driving abilities with ADHD. Consider medication, my record has been a clean slate since I started adderall.
