Hi guys,
I've been taking Ritalin for three weeks or so now as my first ever stimulant trial for ADD(inattentive)alongside my staple bipolar11 meds, Trileptal and Prozac.
I don't quite know what to make of Ritalin- at 15mg daily, it had almost the opposite effect to what I was expecting.Instead of being energized or motivated, I find I'm feeling fairly sullen and withdrawn- it seems to have introverted and dampened my mood.I do however feel very calm, and as one who suffers terribly with dysphoric bouts and rapid cycling, this at least is a positive effect I can't overlook.It's not looking as though its activating any hypomania either.
Socially, I think it could turn me into a bit of a dum-dum.I can't honestly say I feel particularly alert either.Is this just an idiosyncratic reaction on my part, or fairly normal?I'm wondering if a low dose of adderal might suit me better.Any thoughts?Thanks,

(fyi-i loved being on trileptal, worked great for me)
anyway, i was on strattera for 8mo. and did nothing for me (cept' nice appetite suppressant). but just started Rit about a week 1/2 ago. i thought i noticed a 'clearness' and fuctional'ness' to my thoughts and works but looking back i may have just been edging up hypoman wise.
Anyway, i began to notice a decrease in my mood starting last tues. i would be alert till about noon-1:00 (taking my Rit at 8-9:00 every morning) i don't know if that was Rit or not...could it be that it only worked for about 4 hours??
anyway afterthat i would go downhill mood wise and energy wise, i also have this feeling of sort of walking around in a haze kinda. so i don't know if the drug is inducing this? or if it's me and the drug is doing nothing for me??there are several alternatives for stimulant for adhd(add) out there, have you tried strattera? it's supposed to be better for those with bp in that it won't cause as much induced mania in amount of dosage as compared to others (that's what i've been told anyway...)

Ritalin has a half life of 4 hours. That is why there are so many extended release formulations on the market: Concerta, Metadate CD, Ritalin LA. I take Ritalin LA which is like taking two Ritalin tablets 4 hours apart. In my case, I find the effective duration of Ritalin LA is only 6 hours, so immediate release Ritalin would work for me for only about 3 hours.
