Does anyone know what the "cortisol responce" is. I hear it referred to in many abstracts.

I'm thinking it refers to the Cortisol response to Dexemethasone. Many people with depressive symptoms do not have lowering of Cortisol with Dexemethasone, like the average person does.

Hello,

Today we have had it at a lecture at the university. I can confirm the above post.

People with depressive symptoms can have dysfunctional cortisol response pattern, they cope less effectively with stressors (whether they are external or internal: mental). This is linked with what's termed learned helplessness.

I am happy that you're trying to find answers to your situation. I hope that you stopped thinking that the only way is to commit suicide. Trust me, I been there and I assure you that a day will come and all the bad will be gone and you will be back on track again :-) It seems cloudy I know but don't lose hope and always see and recognize even the slightest beams of the sun behind those clouds, because the sun is always there.

Learned helpessness is a term of lack of power and coping mechanisms. It can be related to life history but also depression in itself can induce it. However, it can be changed and replased with will and strength.

"Free will" is the term William James (the father of american psychology and the tird president of the american psychological association) has given to the power that replaces the learned helplessness. You might be running out of it now, but you will gain it as I did and the other millions who did and still can do. James decided at his peak of depression to start believing in free will and he managed to treat hs depression at a time no antidepressant existed !! And he went further and claimed the great recognition as the father of modern psycology, in my eyes psychology was born by James, not the unpractical/metaphysical europians (at the time).

His experience of free will lead him to believe in Pragmatism (he was the leader of that philosophical school). And it's his Pragmatism that had an explosive impact on Psychology.

I have copule of things to suggest to you: have you and your doctor/psychiatrist considered that you might be suffering from a hormonal hypo or hyper function ?!!

Have you already tried MAOI ?!! Remeron ?? Wellbutrin?? mood stabalizers such as anti epeliptics? Lamotrigine ? Selegiline ? Buspar in a combo with a SSRI ??

If it's sunny at your place try to get some of it. I would be very mad if it's and you just reamined in front of such a damn PC, cause here I haven't seen it in weeks :) You see I live on norwegain coast......

This might be the longest post I ever wrote. Count the words and sense the empathy, it just CAN'T be true that the world isn't worth living. It's just the depression.

Keep me updated.

Hugs,
Christine.

I guess I will try some of the sinequan tonight. I think that I have slipped into all or nothing thinking. I have lost most pleasure.

I have a hard time letting things go.

My hardest thought to overcome is panic. I fear that if I don't know my subjects 100% then I will fail them, and so I can't stop studying.

I don't think I'm manic, but I do think that I'm not confident in what I am learning. I always feel anxious and this makes learning difficult.

What I really think is that my frontal cortex is not working properly !

i would be curious to know people's experience with blood type vs. adrenal and cortisol response

i have blood type O, normal-low cortisol (even when depressed etc), and find it hard to wake up

i think my adrenal glands are entirely responsible for my stress response, which is quite intense

i have heard it is the opposite for other blood types

Hi Linkadge,

I just wanted to say, from reading your threads I think you're being way too hard on yourself about your studying and not taking things in. Allow yourself a little time to not take things in properly for while at least your making the effort and still going to your studies even if it might seem like waste of time, you still get up and go.

Afterall, wastn't it you who recently built your own TMS device, you can't be that dense after all

Thats the problem, I havn't felt well since I started the rTMS. I really think that I've fried my brain since then.
