Med question for dissociatives

Posted by Shadowplayers721 on September 20, 2004, at 7:41:30

Do you find any medication makes you worse? I had a horrible experience with Geodon and I am not sure why. Doc thinks it's because it relaxed me.

Do you find any medication makes you better?

I have MPD and I don't think medication has helped tremendously besides smoothing out the edges so to speak. I am on the max dosage for Zoloft, but I've tried Zyprexa, Seroquel and Risperdal and none of them helped at all (if you are asking about anti psychotics)

I probably would collapse without Zoloft. The only medication I find that helps immediately is ocassional Valium for relaxing and getting sleep.
I'm in Europe so I don't know about Geodon, but when you say horrible experience, what happened?

One important thing is that diss. disorders aren't treated with medications, more commonly the goal is to dissect the individual difficulties for each patient and address those with medication. I personally have a lot of trouble with severe depression and anger and Zoloft has helped a lot with that. I'm like Zen Lady now..(haha) But for those who are wanting meds to escape hearing voices, there is no medication that helps with that. Zyprexa helps with psychotic episodes in my experience (hallucinations and paranoia). I am very reluctant to take it because it makes me so druggy and flatline.

Geodon didn’t work out for me, either. The first dose of the day would basically knock me out, yet the evening dose didn’t affect me. I eventually switched to taking all 160 mg at night, which helped prevent me from sleeping so much. I don’t think Geodon did anything beneficial though. My situation is probably different from yours as I am also Bipolar I. I was diagnosed with MPD (now DID) in 1981 and Bipolar in 1998. It’s debatable whether anything other than tranquilizers helped the dissociation. The old antipsychotics like Haldol and Trilafon were awful; I had a “toxic reaction” to Mellaril and was hospitalized on a medical floor for almost two weeks in 1980. More recently, Tegretol was intolerable. Seroquel gave me horrible nightmares. I’m generally able to tolerate a lot of meds. The problem is that they don’t seem to work very well. The exception was Zoloft, which worked so well and so fast that I got manic. I wish I could take it again, but my pdoc won’t let me take any antidepressants anymore.

These are meds I’ve taken in the last 6 years:
Effexor
Depakote
Zyprexa
Topamax
Paxil
Risperdal
Gabitril
Lamictal
Wellbutrin
Klonopin
Celexa
Eskalith
Geodon
Zoloft
Zonegran
Strattera
Seroquel
Tegretol
nortriptyline
Stelazine
Provigil
Ativan
Trileptal

These some of the meds I took between 1972-1988. (I was off all meds between 1989-1997.)
Haldol
Thorazine
Artane
Ritalin
Permitil
Vivactil
Sodium Amytal
Serax
Mellaril
Cogentin
Restoril
Sinequan
Tranxene
Thorazine
Ritalin
Asendin
Xanax
Mysoline
Eskalith
Inderal
Trilafon

I agree with tinydancer- for dissociation itself, meds don't make much difference at all. But for the depression which often goes with it, I think all of the SSRI's,SNRI's and Wellbutrin can be helpful. I assume that TCA's and MAOI's would be too, but I don't have any personal experience with them. I don't have experience with the AP's either. I do think psychotherapy is very helpful in integrating the *parts* and recovering lost memories. It's helped me enough so that I don't take medication any longer, although I took a lot of different AD's for about 10 years before I began intensive therapy. It's a serious thing to have, but i do think psychotherapy, done properly is very helpful.

Geodon made me dissociate worse. I had parts jump out randomly that I didn't even know exist. I was totally dysfunctional. My family was going to have me hospitalized, but then a family member remember the med switch - Geodon. I am not doing great now, but it's not the jack-in-the-box time. It's was awful.
