Hypothyroidism and Depression

Posted by skoal on September 1, 2004, at 12:14:16

Good Day All,
I am a new memeber for posting however have been following occasionally. Recently there was some talk about hypothyroidism and depression. Can someone explain or elaborate on the link between the 2?
I have been on Synthroiod for appx. 3 yrs.(current dosage 225 mg) and Effoxor for appx. 2 yrs.(current dosage 225 mcg). Lately I have been feeling very withdrawn, cranky, sleepy, irrated easily. I don't want to increase my Effexor as eventually my goal was to eliminatethat. I have made an appt with the Endocrinologist this week to get control again and I would like to be prepared with experiences of the group prior to my visit.

Any help is appreciated.
Regards,
SKOAL

SKOAL- Untreated hypothyroidism (TSH greater than 4.0) can contribute to depression. But since yours is being treated, you don't have to worry about it as long as you keep taking your Synthroid. You only need to concentrate on the depression part.

It sounds like the Effexor is now being less effective. It's very common for antidepressants to become less effective over time. The simple solution is to either raise the dose, or add another drug to the mix. Stopping the Effexor to switch to a different drug can be done if the first 2 solutions don't work.

Hey Skoal,

You might also want to consider Armour Thyroid (natural thyroid derived from a pig's thyroid gland). Synthyroid only provides you with T4 for your thyroid conidition and not T3, which is actually the most metabolically active form of thyroid hormone. Armour Thyroid will provide you with T4, T3, T2, and T1. Your endocrynologist might not be too keen on trying Armour Thyroid because medical science is more commercially driven that rationally and/or scientifically driven.
Check out this link and what this lady says about her experience w/ thyroid. You could learn a lot, I know I did. http://personal.bellsouth.net/w/u/wurmstei/

I personally would go that route before trying a new antidepressant.

Good luck!
ESB

Thanks ESB,
Actually this week in my Endocrinologist appt mentioned potentially changing from Synthroiid to Armour Throid after we get the blood tests back.
He also mentioned Cytomel(sp?)
Said though that Cytomel can be messy at the beginning because of the time it takes to get to the correct dosage, etc.
I appreciate the feedback. Let's hope something comes up in the tests that come back.
