meds causing elevated triglycerides?

Posted by Donna Louise on June 5, 2004, at 7:34:43

Howdy doo, I am wondering if one or more of you folks know if any of these psychotropic meds cause elevated trigs? Mine have been steadily increasing since last year when I added provigil and have taken a big jump when I started strattera. (300+)That is my trig # not the stattera dosage! which was 25mg. I have quit taking it for several reasons so will retest in a month. Other maintenance meds are prozac and buspar. All my other lipid levels are great. Low cholesterol and high HDL, glucose good at 80. I am adopted so don't know genetics.
Thanks for info!!!

Donna

Hi Donna,

It is possible but would likely be rare with those drugs you have listed. It is more likely to occur with the sedating antihistamine type AD's & some of the atypical AP's. Keep us posted on how those levels go.

Cheers,
Panda.

Yes, I know about remeron, ect. I have quit the stratterra as it seemed to be making this exercise in the heat intolerance I have developed in the past couple of years worse. sigh. I am getting the levels checked again soon and will let you know. Maybe you have some more info about these meds making it hard to breathe in the hot weather during exertion. It started with more extreme exertion but now it seems like not much will make it hard to breathe. Cardiac echo and EKG all normal.
Thanks again!!

Donna

Hi Donna,

I actually use Remeron, metabolic syndrome is just something you have to watch out for.

Meds that raise Norepinephrine can upset your sweat system, have you noted reduced sweating at all?

I can't say that I noticed reduced sweating although I did get the dry mouth occasionally. It made me sleepy during the day and not sleep as well at night. Those were the only noticable side effects and I would gladly have put up with them as it gave me an inner quiet that I have never had, but this gasping for air was not acceptable. I do endurance riding (horses) and cannot be dropping out of the saddle from lack of oxygen!
Thanks for your interest.

No, I have not tried any of the TCA's. Have you taken either of these? I am assuming they would be ones that effect norepinephrine? What are their side effects. I do not want to try anything that will make me fat or more sleepy!
