How to tell if a drug reaction is dangerous/allerg

Posted by University on May 18, 2004, at 14:43:45

Sorry for the similar post, but I just started Focalin yesterday, and have had some noticable all-over itchiness. HOWEVER, I had taken Adderall for a few days before that, with the same effect--the Adderall didn't affect my ADD at all. I used to take Ritalin, with no side effects, for over a year, but decided to switch to something else because of a bit of tolerance/dose creep.

I have no other allergic-type symptoms, and I've had this itchiness before in my life, unrelated to medication.

My essential question is, could it be dangerous for me to continue with this drug under the circumstances? The itching isn't very pronounced, and I feel as if I can't do without the Focalin while waiting for my next pdoc appt. (in three weeks). My pdoc dryly told me to "stop taking it and see if the itching goes away" to determine whether it's causing it.

Thanks in advance!
JM

PS--please help me--I'm in a real pickle!

Well, my opinion is that this is not necessarily bad advice and something I might suggest myself, as this is the type of action that is commonly undertaken to determine the source of allergies. If you feel you can't live without the Focalin, you may wish to call into the doctor's office and ask that a message be relayed to him to suggest an appropriate antihistamine, perhaps something you could buy OTC.
