How safe is Zyprexa?

Posted by Guy on April 25, 2004, at 19:57:20

Just how safe is Zyprexa? It makes my tongue twitch, but not continuously and not very much. I'm wondering what other people have experienced with this med. 10 mg sure helps me sleep and feel better!

zyprexa is an Anti Psychotic medication which also has sleep inducing properties. My son takes 20mg per day for his illness. It is relatively safe but there are problems with weight gain which can lead to high blood pressure or diabetes. I believe an active person who takes it can avoid weight gain. Ask your doctor if you are having side effects. It is my belief that it could cause problems in people with normal Serotonin levels but its just my opinion.

I gained 35 pounds in 6 weeks, and it made me sleep 10 hours a night or more. I could never get by without a nap after dinner. Actually, i hardly got by at all, so that's why i quit after almost 5 months.

Hi:
Your last sentence, ... 10 mg sure helps me sleep and feel better! <<<<
In my opinion, if you feel this way, ... sounds to me like you're quite happy on this med., Zyprexa, then you should keep taking it, because it's hard to find the right med. that helps your condition mentally and emotionally, although there are quite a number of different named psycho. med.
In regard to SE, ... I didn't gain weight from 5 mg. Zyprexa, but at the beginning of Zyprexa regimen, it made me a lot of sleep and nap too, but went away with the time, ... about 4-5 weeks' later. For me, Zyprexa has given me tremendous relief in several problems, rapid cycler, anxiety, 'Rage'/dysphoria, some M.S. effect along with AD. Then, it's much better than any other psycho. med. in my case, Ultra Rapid cycler Bp.

I take 5 mg at night for my OCD...it seems to be helping, and I haven't noticed any major side-effects other than my appetite is up. It is sedating, and the first time I was on it I noticed I was having trouble finding the right vocabulary...that doesn't seem to be a problem for the most part.

It's an Antipsychotic & personally I would not take one unless I had psychotic features, are you taking it for any reason besides sleep? There is a bunch of old TCA type AD's that are dirt cheap & hit all the same receptors as Zyperxa, they just don't hit Dopamine.

Cheers,
Panda.

Maybe the tonge twitch is the result of zyprexa making food taste better?

My son introduction to Zypexa was last Aug/Sep (2003). After being on Zyprexa for 1 mo., we took a ride in our Mustang Convertible. Halfway thru the ride he complained that his throat was bothering him and could we stop for water. We stopped at the next jiffy mart for bottled water and he drank a bottle pacing back and forth.
He told the Psy Dr about it on the next visit to which the Dr rxd Klonopin for "panic attack". He is improved much now and using Zyprexa and Zoloft ditching the Klonopin months ago. Two weeks ago he said he still gets panic attack. He pointed to his throat and explained it was difficult to swallow. We have just been through a Barium swallow test to which the tester acknowledged he had trouble with swallowing. That was this morning. Just now I read on a web site that Zyprexa can cause swallowing difficulties. It Would have been nice to know that last August!

It is a VERY potent antipsychotic ... if if is to take care of psychotic features then its probably a very good medication.

But if its just for sleep, there are other alternative meds that are less agressive and don't have the dangerous side effects like diabetes (trazodone and the likes).

My dummy doctor started me on 5mg right away to take care of slight hallucinations and sleep problem. Well lo and behold, since Zyprexa lowers the seizure treshold, it gave me about fifty absence seizures a day. Good thing he didn't mention that I shouldn't drive or operate machinery and such when he gave it to me.

I'm just glad it didn't happen while I was crossing the road or something like that.

The weight gain is also a pain in the butt ... and there isn't much you can do about it because its not that it makes the food taste better ... it plays with your blood sugar and you do really feel hungry as hell all the time. Now I usually have a very stable weight ... and in a little over a week I went from 105 to 111 pounds.

Camille,
My son gained about 60 lbs in 3-4 months. His Psy Dr. suggested switching to Abilify but am trying to hold off until school is out, he is in 10th grade and he needs to get his HS Diploma.

Try depakote with the mix for a while? I used to have a similar problem that I took depakote for a year and it went away. Some kind of body stiffness. I went to many doctors till a specialist put me on it.

You know, I think its important to mention it to your doctor that you're worried about the weight gain. For me I told her fair and square : weight gain is unacceptable for, if I gain weight, I'm not going to be medication compliant ... so she gives me meds that do not induce weight gain.

An intelligent doctor will take it into account ... so long as there are other alternatives, its in their best interest to make sure side effects are not killing any hopes of compliance ...
