> I have been on Effexor for depression and anixety and gained 40 pounds in 6 months. This has only made my depression worse. My doctor is now changing me to Lexapro, but I am concerned of the anixety side effects. Are they like full blown panic attacks? I went through that before I got medicated and would really rather not travel down that road again. Any advice about what to expect would be helpful. No one in my family has had experience with depression before and I do not have anyone to discuss my concerns with.

Jeanine, I have been taking Lexapro for about 5 wks and have just increased from 10mg to 15mg. I know that some of the people who post here have had increased anxiety with Lexapro, but most have been able to take something, like Xanax, to counteract it.

Lexapro happens to help my anxiety, but depression is my main concern. I do have insomnia side effects, but Lorazepam helps me with that. There will be a period of adjustment to any of this type of medication.

There are many posts on this board (Psycho Babble) regarding Lexapro side effects, if you know how to maneuver in here. If you have trouble finding anything, just post a message asking for help, and someone will take your hand.

Good luck, and please keep posting; there are a lot of warm, caring people here who know what you are going through. You don't have to go it alone, 'cuz we are here for you:) [BIG HUG] ...jlynne

Hi there...
I was on Paxil for 2 months and Lexapro for 2 months and both meds caused weight gain for me. Now I'm on Effexor and have been on it for almost 3 weeks now and I don't know if I'm gaining weight or not. I am so depressed over the weight gain until I don't know what to do!! I went from 160 lbs to 181 lbs since November 2003. My clothes are really beginning to fit tight and that really bothers me. I didn't have any side effects from any of the meds I took or the Effexor - - I feel GREAT (but fat). Good luck to you and keep posting for encouragement, info and support!!

Thanks jlynne and cocohoneynut. This whole message/thread deal is new to me, but I really could use some people that understand, so I hope I'm doing this right. I have not drank much on Effexor, but when I have there has not been any side effects. Can you tell me about any side effects that I might see with Lexapro if I go out for drinks?

Hi Jeanine,

My psychiatrist told me to watch my limits, but drinking on Lexapro isn't a big deal so long as you're responsible. (i.e. 1 or 2 drinks)

K.

I drank a drink or two while on Lex and Effexor. I didn't notice any drastic measures or anything. Take care and be careful!!

Use caution when drinking with any medication. You are certainately not going to die from drinking 6 nights in a row. Keep in mind that alcohol is a depressant. Jenn
