From Effexor to Prozac

Posted by luvmygirlz on March 16, 2004, at 11:06:22

I have been trying to wean myself off of Effexor after taking it for almost year. It was making me very tired and I gained amost 40 pounds. After 2 months of weaning down, my last dose of 37.5 every other day for 2 weeks I was still having horrible nausea and dizziness. On top of that I just found out 2 weeks ago that my father has stage 4 cancer, also my husand works out of town and I'm raising two small children by myself. I caved in and went back to th DR and she put me on Prozac. My question is, sould I have just tried to stick things out or am I better off taking the Prozac? Is going off the Prozac in a few months going to be as awful as going off of the Effexor? I'm confused!!!!

I think you'll find that others will advise you that Prozac may actually mitigate the Effexor withdrawal effects.

Hang in there. It's a tough load to carry, and you should take advantage of anything that will help you shoulder the burden.

Going off Prozac is supposed to be much easier than going off Effexor. Moreover it's possible that Prozac won't make you tired. If I were in your shoes I'd follow your psychiatrist's suggestion.

Hello,

I don't have any experience with Effexor, but I was Prozac for 2 years and found it to be a very helpful medication. It did wonders for my depression and for me Prozac was very easy to stop taking. It stays in your system for a long time, so you don't go through withdrawl if you stop taking it cold turkey.

Best of luck to you.

K.
