therapy question for panic/anxiety

Posted by chess on March 3, 2004, at 9:53:07

How does a person with panic/anxiety disorder know for sure that they are not in danger of going crazy (have a psychotic break or become delusional)?

When people actually go crazy (have a psychotic break or become delusional), are they anxious about it before it happens?

Chess-
If you are diagnosed with panic/anxiety disorder you can be 100% certain you will feel like you are about to lose your marbles at times..

the good news is you can also be 100% certain that that will NOT happen

a panic attack can only go so far..is your bodies fight/flight response that produces things like a feeling of unreality that can make it feel like you are going crazy..but it gets to a certain point..and that is it..it is the constant fear of what is on the other side of that point that keeps us anxious..however..in time we realize that there is nothing more to be afraid of..we have lived thru the worst panic attacks can do many times over...then the fear of them lessens..and the panic attacks become less frequent until they go away..

people that truly become psychotic or delusional do not usually feel anxioius about it...my therapist always tells me that truly crazy people do not know that they are crazy most of the time..

being dxed with bp1 and panic disorders, i have gotten delusional- but that was totally due to bipolar, and i was very unaware that i was delusional. i have to agree with nikki that you may feel like you're going crazy with panic disorder, but the reverse is true with this disorder- you most certainly won't.
hope this helped- judy

sorry i meant nicky, not nikki (nm)

Hi Chess,

Like Nicky said, you can be sure that you're not going crazy. I know it doesn't feel that way when you're having a panic attack...but you aren't loosing your mind. People who are crazy don't realize that their perception is off. So, oddly enough, it's a good thing that you're AWARE of feeling like you're going mad because it means you're not.

K.
