Remeron and stimulant combination?

Posted by Alex J on March 2, 2002, at 17:10:36

I am presently on Dexedrine (30 mg per day in two divided doses) and feel I need to add something else to combat my depression.

Has anyone ever tried combining Remeron with a stimulant, preferably Dexedrine? If so, could you please tell me what kind of response you experienced?

Thanks in advance to any and all replies!

Alex

I don't take Dexedrine but I'm on 60mg of Ritalin a day and 30mg Remeron. I also take 3 mg Klonopin everyday and right now I feel more OK than I have in a long time. I don't do very well on
"activating" ADs and Remeron helps me sleep which has always been a problem for me. I'm pleased with the combo although not entirely satisfied. In any case, Remeron doesn't seem to have so-called
"sexual side-effects" and the stimulants counter its most unpleasant side effects like drowsiness and carb-cravings.

Do you take immediate release Ritalin or one of the other formulations like Concerta, Metadate or Ritalin SR? Do you spread your Ritalin dose throughout the day or do you take it all at once? I assume you take the Remeron at night because it's supposed to be so sedating?

I had tried Dexedrine plus Remeron a few summers ago, but I was unable to tolerate the combo. That's just me, though. I have paradoxical reactions to almost all meds, so I think it's worth a try for the original poster.

What is the Klonopin for?

I'm taking Dexedrine and Prozac, and just started Temazepam for sleep problems, but the temazepam isn't working and I wonder if Klonopin would work?

I can't take Remeron or TCAs because of the weight gain.

Anxiety and SP. It does not make me sleep however and if Temazepam doesn't work for you it's unlikely that clonazepam would because its a weaker hypnotic.

I haven't gained any weight on Remeron, partly because I don't tend to gain weight no matter what, but probably also because Ritalin is an effective appetite suppressant. Maybe the Dexedrine would prevent you from gaining weight?
I find that I get very strong carb cravings about an hour after I take my Remeron which I think is related to the anti-histamine effect of the drug (Benadryl does the same thing), but this effect is gone by morning and I sometimes even have trouble eating.

I take three 20mg doses morning, early afternoon and early evening.

Yes, I do, and it's the only hypnotic that has worked for me for such a long period (four months so far).

What side effects did you have from the combo? I do terribly on practically every anti-depressant but I found that benzos almost always helped. For instance, I did OK on Prozac in combination with Xanax, but I couldn't tolerate Zoloft, Effexor or Wellbutrin on their own, they made me irritable and agitated. But when I combined Wellbutrin with Klonopin there was no problem.

I gain weight fairly easily, and I know that doxepin makes me gain weight, even in very small doses (less than 10mg/day).

The weight comes on even if I do not eat any more or exercize any less. I tried doxepin again hoping that the dexedrine would offset the weight gain, but even at 5mg/day I would gain.

Nothing yet has worked as well for sleep. Anyone know what are the most potent hypnotics?

The bad side effects I had from the Remeron plus Dexedrine combo were severe headaches, very high blood pressure and, at times, rapid heart rate. I have a very hard time combining meds, but I need both an antidepressant AND a small dose of stimulant, so I was hoping that the combo you take might help me. I will discuss it with my psychopharmacologist this week. Thank you for your help.

Take a higher dose of Klonopin. If you don't take anything to counteract its sedative effects then it should definitely work. It has strong muscle relaxant properties as well. I think it could very well help you sleep.

I taken remeron 45-60mg a night and take 30mg and 30mg generic dexedrine spansules 2 times a day (60mg spansules). I think remeron goes nicely with dexedrine, I actually read that remeron enchances dopamine trasmission (so i heard). I also red an artile on pubmed that said remeron had no effect on the d2 dopamine receptors, those are the ones that theortically increase wakefullness.
