Hi new here. I have terrible pain from TN and was wondering if anyone has used topamax For TN and how your doing. I'm also very depressed and don't know much about Topa but neuro doc is considering putting me on it. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Of course you're depressed- You're in chronic pain. I have occasional TM headaches- they're horrible!
I'll level with you- Topomax is a weird drug. I took it for a mood stabilizer and it made me psychotic- I was wandering around in the highway in heavy traffic. For some people it's great, but for some (40%) it's bad stuff. (quote from MD) Neurontin is touted for pain, but it's useless and scandal plagued. Lot of lawsuits.
I have chronic pain from multiple injuries in my feet and legs, along with neuropsych problems and TM headaches. I use Trileptal, and am very pleased. You have to raise the dose very slowly to get it right, but it works wonders for me.
There are other drugs too- and I don't mean to freak you out over the Topomax but I've heard of other people having problems and you have a right to know about this. Talk to your doc- you may be getting Topomax because they have a hot blond company rep who visits and has snakecharmed him on it. A lot of drugs get chosen that way.
Other people may have other opinions- this is my experience.Lizzy

Thanks for your input. Neurontin drove me crazy. Funny how drugs are with each person. I've also tried several other seizure meds for TN. now my phychiartist and neurologist are going to work together on putting me on a drug. Their thinking Topamax. I'm currently just starting Keppra. I'm a type of person very sensitive to drug side effects, so getting me on the right med is a difficult challenge for my docs. Thanks again for posting so quick............freebyrd2

I take Topa for BPII, but it has at the same time cured me of my sciatica, chronic tendonitis and plantar fascitis, all of which I suffered from before I started taking it. All I know is that Topamax must be a great pain killer too, at least for some kinds of pain (sciatica is nerve related, at least...I don't know about the pain in my ankle and foot, which I've had for 3 years...which is now gone...?) As for the depression, Topa is actually used as a mood stabilizer, not an anti-depressant, and is actually known to aggrivate depression is some people. Anyway, check around some more, and good luck with your decision.
This is the end of the thread.
