Adderall question

Posted by Kristylynn on January 27, 2004, at 7:21:42

I am diagnosed as BiPolar and I am currently up to 200 mg of lamictal and 300mg of wellbutrin. Before I started these two , I was on depakote 1000mg, seroquel, and wellbutrin... I had ran out of meds and at the time couldn't afford to go back to my doctor to get more meds. My cousin was taking adderall but her doctor switched her so she gave me the rest that she had... I know that you aren't suppose to just change meds like that but I was really starting to feel "weird". So I started taking the adderall.... I felt so good... I was able to finish things I started months ago... was able to focus much better. I wasn't scared to go out around people in a social enviroment. In short , I had never felt so good... So when I fianlly was able to make an appointment with my doctor, I told him that I wanted to switch to adderall... He looked at me like I was crazy... I am 34 years old.. He says that they only prescribe this med to kids and that it is habit forming... I was very disappointed. So first he tried me on stattera... That did not work for me... So then he switched me to the lam and well... I really don't feel like this is working for me either... I have no energy and I am gaining weight... Actually I am more depressed now then I have been in a long time... My doctor says there is no way he will ever prescribe the adderall to me... Should I try another pdoc or is it impossible for me to ever get back on the adderall... I think that it is a shame that the only med I felt ever worked for me is supposedly bad for me... I am very confused and frustrated... Any help is greatly appreciated.....

Many of us here take Adderall and we are adults. What is habit forming is your ability to accomplish something while on it. (I think). Your pdoc should and will control it so that you are not abusing it.

Sometimes family practice doctors won't prescribe it due to the fact that it is a controlled substance. Most all psychiatrists will prescribe it to adults because it's very beneficial to many adults.

I would recommend you get a second opinion.

Good luck.

I know how you must feel,Kristy,it,s the same old "song and dance"with some of these cowardly,dime-a-dozen Family Practice Dr.,s,they just will NOT Rx any of the Controlled Substances(Opiates,Amphetamines).Have faith. There are many that know enough about medicine that WILL Rx these very helpful meds, you have to find them.My Dr. prescribes both Opiates and Amphetamines to me,because that,s what I needed, not what he wanted me to take, cause it would,nt get him into any trouble if I mis-used them or something.Well,I did not,and I now am able to work at my own pace,am finishing my final Accredational studies for the Fitness business I was able to start, and am now in the process of being able to help dozens of people to feel better and live a happier, healthier life, thanks to my mature Dr. who saw past the fear of the bad,old DEA sneaking up on him,and fearlessly gave his patient the meds he needed to overcome his ADHD and Chronic Lumbar Pain.Simply put,he allowed me to become an asset to the community, instead of a dependant on the tax payer.I,ll get off my soap box now so you can find a good Dr.,too!Good-Luck! yes, try another pdoc. adderall's not bad for you unless you abuse it. do you think that you will abuse it if it is prescribed for you? do you have a history of abusing meds? did you take all of your cousin's supply in one hour? if so then you might have a problem and it could be bad for you.

there are pdocs out there who won't think twice about prescribing a stimulant to an adult, and there are pdocs who wouldn't consider prescribing a stim to a child with the worst case of adhd in the world. they are all different, thou most are in the latter group.

oh, and you can just forget about a general practitioner prescribing one. They are only good for handing out SSRI's like candy and that's about it. in fact, some of them seem to be so ignorant they will tell you that the only drugs that exist for depression are SSRI's. When I first went to a GP for social anxiety, after trialing zoloft for a month, since it wasn't helping, I asked if there was anything else I could try besides a SSRI? Well, I was told "the only other meds for anxiety are antipsychotics, and you don't want to go on one of those." talk about confusion..

You see, there seems to be an epidemic going around in the medical community, the symptoms seem to involve a bad case of amnesia which has caused many doctors to forget that the number one meds prescribed for anxiety, benzodiazepines, don't even exist anymore! staggering isn't it? I think there may be a similar epidemic going around involving stimulants.. you best be on the look out!
