Need help-Meds for anxiety+irritability+depression

Posted by SpreadDaAloha on January 22, 2004, at 13:02:32

I am experiencing a depressed mood, anxiety, and extreme irritability. I have had the best luck with Neurontin (Gabapentin). I take 900mg per day (3 x 300). I plan to keep trying higher doses because it's the only thing that has noticeably helped.
I have a prescription for Wellbutrin, but I quit taking it because it increases my irritability some, but it DID help with energy. I have taken Topomax, Keppra, Lamictal, Depakote, and most Benzos. I took Zoloft and it seemed to help with my mood.
I'm thinking about trying Remeron, Lexapro, or Effexor. I really don't know what drug to try next. I want to decrease my anxiety, depression, and irritability, without making me lethargic like Keppra did. And I HATE sexual side effects (Zoloft had bad sexual side effects).

Any ideas for a next step? I need to help my doctors because they don't seem to take much time thinking about what to do...

Hello,

I am currently taking 10 mg of lexapro and it has done wonders for my anxiety/depression. Some people report having sexual side effects, but others don't seem to have a problem with them. A lot of people have also found lexapro to be very energizing. Of course, all medications effect everyone differently. Lexapro has been very good for me. I hope you find the right med for you that offers relief from your anxiety, irritability and depression. Best of luck!

K.

my experience with Neurontin was that it made me more irritable. I was very angry with people that I normally wouldn't be. I cannot remember re: your post but try taking Klonopin as needed for anxiety. good luck

Dear Spread,
Please try to find a psychopharmacologist if your current Docs are lost! Remeron may be a reasonable request. See "Review of the results from clinical studies on the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of mirtazapine for the treatment of m. depression" by Jan Fawcett, J Affect Discord 1998 Dec;51(3): 267-85. The abstract is enough for you to read . I think you will find fairly rapid relief from the above mentioned symtoms. However, The article does not discuss Neurontin. Good Luck. Micro

I vote for Lexapro over Remeron any day of the week.. Unless you tolerate Sedative drugs.
Remeron left me unable to lift weights completely and very few medications I've tried had this effect on me., I usually can "gut" it out at the gym with sedation but not in the case of Remeron..

Remeron didn't do much for my irratiblity, but the Neurontin/Remeron combo seems to relieve it for the most part. The Neurontin has only been with me for a few days, so I hope the calming effect lasts. P.S. You'll get incredible sleep with Rem+Neur combo--it takes about 5 hours for me to 'wake up' lol

Hi there. You know it sounds like you MAY be bipolar type 2. The irritability sounds like hypomania. That is how I experience hypomania anyone. Althought I do realise we are all different.

Have you tried taking trileptal? Trileptal is an oxyginated version of Tegretol. Tegretol is used for BP2 especially when there is rage and irritabilty. I recently started taking it and have noticed an improvement. Also you might was to try adding some Niacin (Vitamin B3) at 300 mg a day. It is also known to help with irritability.

I can't tell if you are female or not, but if you are and are on birth control, you might want to try coming off that and using another method.

Hope this helps.

Maxime

What are the side effects of trileptal (sp?). Does it cause weight gain?

The trileptal makes me drowsy when I up my dose but then goes away. Other than that , no side effects for me and no weight gain. It can make people a little dizzy.
