Adderall, depression?

Posted by Laree on December 27, 2003, at 20:03:17

Does anyone here take 50 mg. or more of Adderall per day? I've been on between 40-50 mg./Adderall for about a year now. The first few months it worked very, very, very well. Now I feel that some days it barely works! And also, if anyone has/is taking doses at levels like mine, have you experienced any depression while on it?? I tried about 50-60 mg. of dxm tonight in hopes that it would help with this poop-out. but I don't want to tell my pdoc about it b/c then he might pull me off of it altogether when i really do need it for my adhd; and i am in college...please help! thank-you...

stims alone are not considered a long term fix. amphetamines require increasingly larger dose to acheive the same effect. anyone taking longterm would need to take drug holidays from time to time to make the same dose work. even then you wont get the eurphoria you felt in the early stages.
i made the mistake of thinking all i needed for my depression was dexedrine. but stims should be used to augument a base a/d.

best to you!!!

I've done pretty well with low doses of Adderall (10 mg/day) for a couple of years now. I take it primarily for ADD, but it also helps as an antidepressant. I skip it for a day or two every couple of weeks, which I'm hoping will help to reduce tolerance and/or dependency, and so far this seems to have worked. I don't experience any discomfort or withdrawal when I'm off it; my thinking just isn't as clear.

I am also taking Lexapro & Wellbutrin for seasonal aff. disorder/depression, so I know that stimulants alone are by no means a "long-term" fix for depression. I was prescribed Adderall when they figured out I had adhd. I was asking if anyone here had experienced major depression while ON a stimulant such as Adderall. Thank-you!

The maximum dose of Adderall is 160 mg per day. So hopefully the doctor will approve a dose increase.
