I am a British teeneager who was very recently diagnosed with a depressive disorder. I tend to overerthink and get very anxious when on my own. As a result I have been given the drug Citolopram (20mg).
Now for me taking these pills is (rightly) a massive step. However I am not sure as to how depressed I actually am. I was in a bad way when I went to see a psychologist but im not sure if that truly reflects my current state. I dont even know what my 'state' is. Either way I feel she may have given me these pills too quickly.
I am trying to find out what it entails to take these drugs by asking for as much advice as possible. I have done internet searches and I cannot really get any straight answers, only lists of side effects etc. I feel confused, not only about the drug itself but as to how unwell i have to be to merit its use.
Is okay to take them if only mildy depressed?
Will there be any long term effects?
Should I just take these pills and stop worring?
Have I got anything to lose?This is a very uncertain point in my life and any advice of any kind would be welcome.

Hello,I have taken the medication you are prescribed by your doctor. Celexa has been on the market for about 3 or 4 years in the USA. Many thousands of people have taken it worldwide.
It is supposed to help depressive symptoms. These medications take time to work, so you may experience some side-effects or not, before they start to help you.
Stay in touch with your doctor.
Call her if you have any side-effects that you cannot handle or you. You may have no side effects at all, which is a real good sign.
Rememeber most of the people here are laypersons (patients) like you, not medical doctors, myself included, so make sure to rely on your doctors advice.
If you are still in a "bad way" that could mean lots of things, and a diagnosis by your physician is in order.

Yes.> Will there be any long term effects?

Yes.> Have I got anything to lose?
No.These types of drugs are considered to be very safe with no known long term effects. So just give it a try. If it does not help, you can just stop taking it.
There are however some annoying side effects while taking these types of drugs. They include daytime tiredness, insomnia, sexual problems (problems with erections and orgasms). But not everyone gets these side effects and they can diminish over time.
Also, there are some antidepressants (such as Wellbutrin) that do not generally cause sexual side effects or daytime tiredness.
