Off Klonopin for 15 days. Is it okay?

Posted by Mishal on November 19, 2003, at 0:57:42

Hi

Okay, here I am. Took my last dose of klonopin exactly fifteen days apart. Am okay though there is a gloomy feeling which I think klonopin shouldn't be blamed for. My question is am I going to be okay without klonopin? When are the so called withdrawal symptoms start? I had been on it for over two years and was taking 1 mg daily.
Should I have to worry again over withdrawal symptoms even after these fifteen successful days of off klonopin? What worries me now is not any withdrawal symptoms from klonopin but the thoughts of withdrawals.
Help please!

From experience, my withdrawal started exactly on the 3rd day of not having any. It's sounds like you are in doing okay.

If you haven't experienced any withdrawals by now, you probably won't. I stopped cold turkey from 3mg/day (which I don't recommend.....seizure risk) & had only minor withdrawals for about the first week.

Gee, I don't know how you guys did that. I have been on Klonopin for almost a year, and it has taken me a few months just to cut down from 0.5 to 0.25. If i go without it for a day or two I get withdrawal symptoms that are just like panic attacks, the reason I started taking it to begin with.

All the best!

Actually I still take a very occassional Klonopin. Just every once in a while I will be awakened in the throws of a full blown panic attack. There is really nothing else I can do so I keep a small bottle of .5 next to my bed.
Re: withdrawal-I guess I am lucky in that I don't seem to have severe effects when stopping most meds. I did have a very rough time when I stopped Paxil cold turkey. This was my first AD. The doc didin't tell me about dc fx & tapering off till I called her freaking out convinced I had totally lost my mind & was dying. One thing I have learned from this board, is how TOTALLY different individual reactions can be to the same drugs.

Re: a subject similar to the Klonopin issue, what is the difference between Klonopin and Tranxene? I know they are both benzo's, but it almost seems as if there is more difficulty when stopping Klonopin than Tranxene? I am currently taking Klonopin, only for a couple of weeks and I'm concerned about withdrawals already. A friend of mine takes Tranxene. Just curious, does anyone know if there is a big difference between the two?

Hi Max,

Tranxene is looong acting than klonopin and it's effect is more subtle than klonopin. It is less sedating but antipanic effect is weaker than klonopin's though anxiolytic effect may be the same. Why do you ask? To substitute your klonopin?
Don't worry over withdrawals. The worry will meddle with the good effects of klonopin. I took trazodone one night and the whole night I couldn't sleep because of the fear of priapism. Remember trazodone is a very potent hypnotic. It is thus how the fear of side effects will prevent you from experiencing those nice effects of medications especially in psychiatric field. I took klonopin for more than a year and now completely off. I was really expecting and prepared for some horrible days and nights but so far nothing means nothing at all. After twenty days, I am not that better while I was on klonopin but I think there should be a drug free period and this is the right time for it.
Klonopin is a wonderful medication if you want.

Mishal, thank you for the kind words! Yep, I was kind of thinking about substituting or changing from Klonopin to Tranxene for a short period, just thinking that maybe withdrawal wouldn't be as bad (someone told me that may be the case, not a Medical Professional though).
Anyway, I know what you mean.... I shouldn't worry about tapering off.... that is kinda counter productive, isn't it!!!
Thanks again,

Max
