Memantine?

Posted by missliz on November 6, 2003, at 0:40:55

So whose shrink is trying to talk them into Memantine for anxiety yet? As the favorite lab rat at LSU Psych, I got the pitch for this today and I'm wondering if this will be The Season's Fashionable Experiment in tinkering with other peoples brain wiring. (Ever notice that when it was LSD or X pdocs took it themselves? Just suggest they take a Zyprexa...)
I'm so PTSD right now I'm jammed up in flashbacks a lot of the time despite a lot of benzos. All the anti glutamate rationale around Memantine sounds good, but if anybody else is on the stuff yet, I'd like to hear about it. I'm tired of running on the psydrug hamster wheel.

I second that.
Given the similarities between aspects of depression and dementia (imparied memory, confusion, slowing of thought), it seems like an area worth investigating. Depression is a prodrome of senile dementia in those who go on to develop it. It makes me wonder what effect SSRIs have on overall glutamate activity.
There's already a phase III trial going on in this regard ( http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT00040261 ).

I wanted to hear from somebody who'd tried it already- I'm curious too, and I dug through google today, and it all sounds very interesting, glutamate excitotoxicity (?) explaining GABA short brain pain. I just don't want to be the guinea pig. I've been a real good sport for twenty years but I'm tired, I worry about the drugs doing as much damage as the illness.

Please don't use this site to exchange information that could be used to import into the US prescription medication without a prescription:

Illegal what?

Dr Bob, you need to keep up. Memantine was approved by the FDA and is available by prescription in this country. Call a pharmacy. Hasn't the rep been by with blandishments and trinkets yet?
My doctors are of the most reputable and accomplished sort- I doubt the faculty at a good med school would be steering me towards questionable practices. Especially given that they read proffessional journals and keep on top of things.

I think he was talking about the site that was posted. You can order prescription meds and meds that haven't been FDA approved without a prescription from the site that was posted.

Re: Attn MissLiz- MAOI + Antipsychotic...

A bit off-topic, but, sometime ago, you mentioned how you think Olanzapine + MAOI therapy would be very dangerous...you mentioned a James Barbee MD with regards to your comment.

What exactly causes this combination to be so toxic? You also recommend Risperidone or older APs be combined with an MAOI...why?

Do you see Olanzapine as possibly cancelling out the therapeutic effects of an MAOI- even at a lower dose ie 2.5mg? How? Due to serotonin antagonism? But, then, I believed at this dose it is an agonist with regards to 5HT...

What about MAOI + Amisulpride low dose- we are looking at potent dopamine raising...

Thanks!

Ace.
