Seroquel--weight gain?

Posted by Bellamarie79 on September 18, 2003, at 15:59:46

I was given 25mgs (I could go to 50mgs or 75mgs if that did not work) of Seroquel to help me sleep. I have heard that it causes weight gain and am concerned. I have already put on so much weight from binge eating and depression, if anyone has feedback it would be very helpful.

Well, from my experience, I took 225 Effexor + 50 Seroquel and I lost weight. About half a pound to a pound per week.

It had me worried as I was getting close to two-digits but I stopped taking it altogether.

From what I saw from side effects, it can be weight gain or weight loss ... loss being less common. But for me it just made me like a zombie ... so all I did was sleep and thus no eating.

Anti-depressants are probably more likely to make you gain weight ... stuff like Paxil in particular. I didn't gain anythign from the Effexor though.

i've had some "akathisia eating" (my term) problems whenever i've taken too high of a dose of seroquel (for me, subjectively). i think if those tendencies start showing then you might want to *try* to mentally associate/train your urges to something not quite so bad for you.

during the summer, i've become quite enamoured of frozen grapes. they're like tiny, fruit popsicles. it's not ice cream, i know; but i find that i crave whatever i fixate upon and the ability to consciously choose a comfort food beforehand to fall back upon *really* helps. good luck to you.

Hi, I gained weight on Seroquel but I also knew many people that didn't. Have you been on Topamax? I lost some of the same weight you're talking about when I went on that and it helped my mood, not a lot, but it did.
Seroquel did wonders for me.
Good luck and drink LOTS of water!

I've been on many different dosages of Seroquel to help me sleep. I went from 25 to 50 to 100 all the way to 300mg for many months. I gained A TON of weight. My research psych doc said they were conducting some studies at the University using Seroquel and the number one reason people dropped out was because of weight gain.
