Is anyone taking MOCLOBEMIDE, Manerix

Posted by lillypads on August 10, 2003, at 2:03:12

Hi this is my first post and I'm wondering if anyone has info on "MANERIX" or moclobemide,a RIMA used for depression.I've been on effexor xr for about 2 years and was feeling that it wasn't working for me anymore despite trying to up the dosage. The maximum that I could take was 112.5 without side effects. My doc decided to try me on Manerix, and after going down slowly from the effexor and still feeling really bad for the last 5 days without anything,I'm pleased to say that after only taking 1 dose of the Manerix today I feel 75% better tonite. The zinging and dizziness is almost gone, and my general mood is lifted.I too gained about 20 pounds in the last 2 years, which only worsened my feelings of depression and self worth,so I'm hoping that this new med does not have similar side effects.Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Glad to hear that you're feeling better. If it keeps up, you can consider yourself lucky. This antidepressant has a very mixed track record. For me it was awful. I had no side effects whatever, but it did nothing for my depression and maybe even worsened it.Check through the Psychobabble archives for the last couple of years (if you have the time) and you'll see the many different reactions people have to Moclobemide. I'm just curious. Where do you live? (this med is not available in the U.S.).

When I used Manerix, I had a very positive response to it, and no side effects. I am Mr. Side-Effect, sometimes getting side-effects that aren't even on the list, ya know? Anyway, the drug pooped-out on me at about 6 months.

Maybe that suggests I might do well on an irreversible MAOI, but many of my favourite foods are on the "forbidden" list, so....I didn't make that leap.

Best of luck,
Lar

The story goes that, around the time that the mfr. wanted to market it in the U.S., the SSRIs had hit the scene and were becoming very popular. So the Moc. mfr. tried to have it marketed for social phobia instead of depression but quit the idea after they found out how much it would cost them to get the procedures done for the Food and Drug Admin. (FDA). Some B.S. like that.
It apparently was a matter of bad timing and consideration of money. That's all I know. Maybe someone else can give you more/more accurate details.
Good luck to you, if you try it.

I think (I'm not sure) that the FDA requires U.S. efficacy trial data for drugs approved in the U.S. In other words, the European studies are worthless in getting the drug approved. Another factor was the patent had probably been taken out years before the drug was considered in the U.S. market, and the cost of the efficacy trials, in the context of the patent protection period still remaining, made the drug company decide it wasn's worth it.

I spoke to the overseer of the US moclobemide project some years ago just as it was abandoned. He said that the clinical studies undertaken to get FDA approval for social phobia failed to demonstrate efficacy. It was not a money issue.

Not many people seem to like moclobemide, but I love it. It's one of the most affordable (the generic, anyway) meds out there with very few side-effects. My response to moclobemide was an initial high that sort of faded, but then kicked in after about 8 weeks. I had some irritability and some difficulty falling asleep, but both were transient. I've never heard of anyone gaining weight from moclobemide. I hope this med is as nice to you as it has been to me.
