What does it feel like after having ECT

Posted by denise528 on April 24, 2003, at 11:53:43

I've just had not a very pleasan response to Nardil, although it relaxed me it made me feel really wierd, like although I was doing things I was actually experiencing anything and my whole concept of time seemed to change. I was wondering if ECT Feels like this, does anyone know what it feels like after you've had ECT, do you feel dazed and confused for days afterwards?

Denise,

You wake up with no memory of what has happened. You don't remember coming to the hospital, them putting you to sleep, etc. Gradually your memory returns.

Actually Denise, I remembered everything. The only immediate effect I had was a headache. But the overall effect of many treatments seemed to negatively effect my short term memory.

I imagine there are different effects for different people, how many treatments they have etc.

I had several sessions of bifrontal ECT .It did not do me any good. I went on a vacation with my family during these sessions. I dont remember getting on the plane, being at disney world,or coming home. my sort term memory was destroyed.

Bill,

So you don't remember any of it, how you felt or anything at all?

Thanks to all of you but I was really trying to get an idea of how you felt rather than what your memory was like. Did any of you feel more depressed and foggy, or just as depressed but in a different way?

Denise;
Although ECT may be very effective for depression, 50% of patients will relapse back into depression within one year. I personally believe ECT should be reserved for those who are psychotically depressed or are in immediate danger of suicide. Have you tried Parnate? It is MAOI like Nardil and can have fewer side effects for some. Insomnia seems to be the most common but that can usually be corrected by reducing dosage and/or combining with benzo/hypnotic.

Take care,
Paul

Hi,
I am wondering too. I've read the ECT is back in action so to speak. It seems like it would work- it shocks the chemicals so much that itrearranges things. that's what ADs try anddo. yeah?
sorry about the key board mishaps. I'msorry to say that I had aZoloft w/drawal rage and punched mykeyboard when internet wasn't working andblahblahblah. The space bar works periodically.
yikes?!
Is there too much stigmastism around ecT?

ECT should be used as a last resort, when all meds have failed. They say that after ECT some meds that did'nt work before will start to work. Its been 3 years since my last ECT session and I take 4 meds and Im doing pretty good. But yes I think there is a sigmastism around ECT.Nobody except My imediate family knows I had it.
