Binge Eating...

Posted by daizy on April 27, 2003, at 11:59:15

I had been on a diet last week for two weeks and not even lost a lb, so I figured Id just eat normally again, except I havnt been able to, ive been binge eating, not able to stop even when Im not hungry. I think its my meds that is doing this? Im worried I will baloon in weight which will stress me out and make me more anxious. Does anyone have any advice? (I would stop if I could!)

Chromium polynicotinate (over-the-counter supplement) has always worked great for my carbohydrate cravings, and definitely has curbed hunger to the point that I never even consider binge eating anymore. Just a suggestion, but a lot of people I know swear by this stuff, so I know it's not just me--good luck!

About the Elavil-
Why Does Elavil Cause a Sweet Tooth

Question: Why does Elavil cause patients to have a Sweet Tooth? It also causes weight gain? use. Why is that? What part of its composition does this?

Answer: It seems to have some effect on the "hunger center" in the brain, exactly what it is isn't clear;but, appears to center around serotonin.

I don't know what you can do other than change your medications (if that is at all possible). I have been on my fair share of meds. that made me eat what seemed like 24/7 at times! I remember your complaint all to well. Make sure you are drinking enough water too on a daily basis, water has ALWAYS (at least 64 oz. a day) helped me to lose weight.

Good luck to you.

Awww sweetie, your welcome. Not much help though I suppose. I do understand what you are going through. I find it whacky that the same meds. that we take to 'feel better' can sometimes make us feel 'even worse/more depressed' from the weight gain of most of these kinds of meds.!

Daizy, I had the same thing happen, mentioned it to my psychiatrist; he said that I'm 'serotonin sensitive' -- might be eating to boost up dopamine. He's having me get off zoloft, try an AD that worked for me in the past, but if that doesn't work well, he's gonna try an SSRI and Strattera.

Chromium has helped me a lot, too. :D

Thanks, I decided that if I really put my mind to it I can stop binge eating, which I did manage to yesterday, so Im just trying hard each day, and will buy some chromium too!
