effexor: first day

Posted by gs on March 20, 2003, at 3:34:07

Hello. I was started on effexor today (the time release one), and my doc told me to take 37.5mg a day the first week, and 75mg a day after that. After going through what i've felt today, i am having my doubts about going on with this med.

-I took the first dose at 2pm with a meal.
-Starting about 2.45pm, I started to feel more alert & anxious, which transitioned into an agitated state where my hands shook slightly, my thoughts raced, and I felt very talkative.
-Most of the extreme physical signs of being hyper seemed to diminish closer to bedtime (2am) so I tried going to bed.
-No such luck. Can't sleep. My body feels tired but my mind is totally not ready for sleep.

That's my story so far. Please, if anyone went through something similar, or knows something about it, let me know if this is normal; in which case, how long should I expect to have to deal with these effects for? If this seems like an abnormal reaction to anybody, do let me know as well. Thanks a lot for any input.

I didnt know of Effexor 37,5 mg. depot? Are you sure?
I would rather go for the 37,5 mg regular release and spit them in half. Go for 18,75 mg for 7 days and then increase your dose to 37,5 mg for 7-14 days and then go to 75 mg depot.
Effexor should be started very slow or else the side effects may scare you. Can be a wonder drug if done right.

yes, they are time release. it's a "starter pack" with 7 37.5s and 7 75s (2 weeks worth)

today (my second day on 37.5) was easier than the first..less agitation, etc. actually it picked up just about an hour ago, my pupils dilated, the whole deal, but not as bad as yesterday. it's a shame its right before bedtime.

but all in all i definitely see a reduction of agitation, so if it continues like this i will be a happy camper.

hello gs, Are you feeling better? I take 75 mg Effexor-XR too. When I first started on it, I had the same reaction you talk of here. It does get better, just try to be patient, and definately talk to your doc if the side effects become more bothersome.
May I ask what your diagnosis is? Are you taking the Effexor for depression only? I am on 3 other meds also.
Keep me posted please, I would like to offer you my help and support.
All the best, Kristen

gs, Effexor-XR has made me one of those happy campers, although when feelings come up that I need to deal with that no med will cure-it gets a little tougher, but I keep taking the Effexor and all is pretty good.

Good luck:-)
