Magnesium in the morning causing my tiredness?

Posted by hok on February 11, 2003, at 16:51:12

For the last year, I've taken 250 mg of magnesium in the morning along with my meds and other vitamins. Anybody notice if this has made you tired if taken during the day? It definitely helps with muscle tension and fatigue but I think it might be making me too relaxed. I guess the easy answer would be to just take it in the PM but it's been great as a natural anxiety fighter for stress during the day.

Any feedback before I make the switch would be helpful. Thanks.

I have considered the same issue, as I take a calcium/mag combo. I do think there is an association, but I've never been able to pin it down precisely.

I take magnesium and I think it helps fight fatigue. I have found calcium fatiguing though.

I've noticed that I do seem more prone to fatigue when I take my magnesium citrate in the morning. I've sometimes wondered if that's because it's interfering with one or more of my other meds or supplements, but I'm guessing it's the mag itself.
When I was taking Provigil, this was never an issue.

There has been no ill effect on my social phobia treIf anything, it may have helped a bit, since I'm more prone to a bit of breakthrough anxiety when I'm tired.

hok:

It's hard to know why the magnesium seems to make you tired. It is likely that it might potentiate the meds you take (but I dont know which ones those are) OR do the opposite, diminish their effects. I find that Mag tends to enhance my SSRI, and so I take Magnesium about an hour or two after I take my SSRI. This seems to be enough time to avoid any interference, and it still gives me that relaxed feeling for most of the day.

So maybe try it and see? I try to avoid taking all my pills and vits at once because it just seems to decrease their efficacy. The neural pathways just seem to get jammed, for lack of a better metaphor.

Magnesium is generally recommended as a natural sedative, tending to promote sleep. As such, doses of magnesium are suggested to be taken 30-45 minutes before bedtime.

I don't know if you're being sedated by the magnesium, but maybe you should try it at night instead.

I have found magnesium taken without calcium to be agitating.
