tianeptine (STABLON)

Posted by archilochos on November 30, 2002, at 2:23:19

i recently bacame aware of the fact, that the atypical tricyclical AD tianeptine, which actually INCREASES reupte of 5-HTP into presynaptic membranes, is licensed in austria.

the following list should be able to give you an impression, which drugs i already have tried:

(1) SSRIs (paroxetine and sertraline): the main effect has been on my enviroment. almost everybody was telling me, how much my behaviour improved etc. the problem was, i - in contrast to my enviroment - didn´t find the SSRI-effects convenient (emotional flattening, sexual side-effects etc.)
paroxetine left me with a severe SSRI-withdrawl syndrome (bad mood, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting etc.)

(2) reboxetine: in the beginning it made me feel wired and agitated; on day 2 or 3 i got a very, very, very dry mouth, constipation and was unable to sleep. also, i absolutely couldn´t get an erection anymore.

(3) t i a n e p t i n e : now it is the second day, i´m taking tianeptine. although structurally it is a tricyclic, i don´t experiece any anticholinergic side-effect - not even a dry mouth! as far as i´m able to describe it´s effects by now, tianeptine has some stimulant-like effects. and my mood started to improve 45min. after taking the first 12.5 mg-dose. t. is a bit anorectic, too.

i´ve just finished reading through 179 abstracts concerning tianeptine (the result of a search on pubmed.gov).

anyone out there, who has tried tianeptine himself?

I am very interested in this medication as
well, in your experience, how is it for anxiety,
do you get the anxiety aspect?

I take celexa with only partial sucess. How would
someone like me, Living in Canada, go about getting this med.

well, by now it is almost day 3 i´m on tianeptine. first i thought about taking only 2 tabs a day (=25mg), but reading throught the literature and taking tianeptine´s short elimination-half-life into account, i´ll probably stick to the package insert´s recommandation, i.e.: 3 tabs/day.
as for your question concening anxiety, i first have to cite what, that "anxiety" is among the substance´ listed side effects - ironically the drug is prescribed for anxious depression! in my opinion it is hard to judge, what is part of the disease, or which symptoms are part of the drugs´ effscts.
personally i often suffer from generalized anxiety, the idea, that my life is on the edge (some catastrophic events are about to happen to me...). my personality is probably best described with the following adjectives: anxious, pedantic, obsessive, rigid, depressive, jealous.
so you will have to keep these personality-traits in mind, when i describe tianeptine´s effects:

(1) reminds me of stimulants (e.g. ephedrine)
(2) what fits into this picture (stimulant-like): anorectic
(3) what does not fit into this picture: anxiolytic - or at least, it soes not aggrevate my anxiety-related problems.

how to obtain tianeptine in canada? the drug is licensed in france under the name STABLON, so i estimate, it is available on xxxxx. if you can´t get there, just xxxxx.

Hi,
It's against site guidelines to exchange information about importing medication without a prescription. I realize he's in Canada, but the same information could be used in the U.S., so I've removed it from your post. Here's a link to the site guidelines http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#illegal

I have been taking tianeptine for 4 months now. I note the same thing that you did- that you do get a lift 30-45 minutes after taking it. I can tell how short-acting it is, can't you? I started it because I have high cortisol levels, and tianeptine is supposed to protect the hippocampus from cortisol's damaging effects, according to animal studies- i.e. allowing the neurons to regain normal size and regrow normal-length dendrites and maybe even to begin regrowing the few thousand new neurons a day that it is supposed to when not under stress. I have seen reports that people continue to experience continued improvements on tianeptine for as long as a year after starting it. I think it is moderately effective as an AD, but for me, I also value the probable protective effect on the brain, and plan to continue with it.

I've been taking tianeptine for two or three weeks and am fairly pleased with it. The thing that I like most about it is the lack of side effects. The most common problems that I've heard are with headaches and slight increases in general feelings of anger, but most people don't experience these issues. I've read that some people see improving benefits even after taking the drug for six months. Tianeptine seems to have an inhibitory action on the effects on HPA- axis activation, which is a big plus. See
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12445834&dopt=Abstract

No one really knows how tianeptine works; its ability to increase the reuptake of serotonin seems to be secondary to some other more direct action. E-mail me at midu2@yahoo.com if you have any questions about tianeptine.
