Has anyone been on effexor xr or whatever those letters are and felt a lot more.. erm... randy? horny? "I want to get off right now" about every ten minutes? :P

Absolutely. For me of course, it was only one of the many symptoms of the hypomania that Effexor caused me to slip into (or rather crash into).

The worst part was that Effexor caused in me the total inability to have an orgasm. Unbelievably frustrating.

Needless to say that the Effexor drug trial did not last long.

Well, I can orgasm... it's just sort of weird to go from absolutely zero ability to climax (Paxil) to "OH GOD I NEED TO GET OFF RIGHT NOW" on Effexor :P

I am so incredibly envious! The one thing about me that has remained normal and consistent over the years, throughout my mental health problems, has been my sex drive -- it was always quite healthy! Until I took Paxil and then Effexor. I swear, while I was on each of those meds, I could go days without even thinking about sex! And when I would finally work myself up enough to try to satisfy my poor, dear husband, an orgasm was impossible to achieve, something I'd never had trouble with before! Oh well, I've moved on to bigger and (hopefully for me) better drugs! Be glad you are having that particular side effect!!

Yep. I thought I was the only one that had increased sex drive! My advise is to enjoy! It must be a gift from God!!!

I did!! I had a huge sex drive on effexor xr, and my orgasms were certainly very good.. however I'm now on Celexa and that desire has gone out the window and left very weak little orgasms!!

Don't I WISH I was having your side effect! No, it's the usual thing with this type of AD... dead from the waist down. What a horrible choice to have to pick whether you want to be able to function without the depression, or whether you want your genitals to function. And this is a drug that's supposed to make you feel BETTER!!

Had anyone else had Effexor aggravate their hypomania, as mentioned in a previous post? I'm a little concerned about that.

Thanks!

Miriamne

Effexor and Paxil both aggravated my hypomania! It made me much more anxious than I was before I started taking them, in addition to killing my sex drive, as mentioned before. I learned the hard way that SSRIs are NOT for me!

However, if you haven't started taking it, you should try it out. The thing to remember about these drugs is that they work differently on everyone. Just to make life more interesting? Ha.

There is definately a time delay on the sexual side effects of the various drugs that have and effect on seretonin and other neurotransmitters (from my experiance with Paxil, Celexa, Effexor XR, Wellbutrin SR). Also the different drugs work with different receptors which have specific effects. Notice in the following list that 5HT2 and Alpha-2 NE have the most effect on sexual functioning.

Two of the side effects of Effexor that I have seen listed are increased libido and anorgasmia. I have experienced the anorgasmia and also erectile dysfunction on Effexor XR. I can't say that Effexor XR increased my libido, because it was already maxed out (I am always interested). Just one the side effects of being Male with testosterone I guess. People with high sex drives have to learn to moderate those feelings, usually I exercise and do intellectual things to use some of the energy.

Dr. Sheldon Preskorn has some interesting information on his site: http://www.preskorn.com

Table 4. Sites of Action and Clinical and Physiological Consequences of Their Blockade or Antagonism
Site of Action Consequences of Blockade

Histamine-1 receptor = Sedation, antipruritic effect
Muscarinic acetylcholine receptor = Dry mouth, constipation, sinus tachycardia, memory impairment
Norepinephrine (NE) uptake pump = Antidepressant efficacy, increased blood pressure, tremors, diaphoresis
Serotonin (5HT2) uptake pump = Antidepressant efficacy, nausea, loose stools, insomnia, anorgasmia
5-HT2A receptor = Antidepressant efficacy, increased REM sleep, anti-anxiety efficacy, anti-EPS
Alpha-1 NE receptor = Orthostatic hypotension, sedation
5-HT2C receptor = Anti-anxiety efficacy, increased appetite, decreased motor restlessness
5-HT3C receptor Antinauseant
Alpha-2 NE receptor = Antidepressant efficacy, arousal, increased libido
Sodium fast channels = Delayed repolarization leading to arrhythmias, seizures, delirium
