I have a friend who is Manic-Depressive. She's been doing pretty well over all the last year or so, but she's recently been ramping up into a manic phase. Her doctor noticed it first (I'm not very good at identifying it yet). Just curious what others take when they start entering this phase? Of course the best is to be on stable meds that prohibit the start of a manic phase, but hers don't seem to be that stable yet.
Her doctor prescribed Geodon (starting at 40mg, then increasing to 60mg) to counteract her mania.
She's currently on:
Lamictal (800mg)
Zoloft (50mg)
Wellbutrin (300mg)
Gabitril (12mg)(She has a few other problems besides bipolar.)

I've always found depakote to be extremely effective in stopping a manic episode. If she is willing to listen, that's awesome. Good luck to her and she's fortunate to have such a good friend- judy

Thanks! I'll mention it to her. I used to take it for my depression and it was okay, but I found out it wasn't good to take it if you have PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome). (I just have Treatment Resistant Depression.)

hmmm... .i guess it depends on how serious the manic phase is, no? ... i don't have any psychotic symptoms, and only get h-manic every once in a while (once a week perhaps)... i find gabapentin is great for me when i want to rapidly stop the mania... ... and i can adjust the dose with greater ease than i'd imagine one could with drugs that have longer half lives and greater side effects....

Hi,I would look at getting the Wellbutrin and Zoloft dose *down*. Perhaps a gradual taper of both. Geodon has worsened hypomania in some people,BTW. Seroquel would be more sedative than Geodon, but you would need to take it 2-3x daily because of its short half-life. Also, it would be important to know what med got added on last (besides the Geodon-since it was added to help quell the mania). That next to last medchange might be the one that possibly set off this latest spell.
