Best benzo's for anxiety related depression?

Posted by johnj on May 15, 2002, at 11:04:26

I have read that some benzo's like the one I am taking, tranzene, may cause depression. What benzo's have most of you used that have anxiety related depression? Has anyone been successful on benzo monotherapy? thanks

ativan and xaxax

did well on ativan alone, but was afraid to stay on it (the ol' addictive thing) but did great 6 months on it.

what i like about having wellbutrin is that it does seem to address the more depressive sides and calms me down more consistently... it gives me a general feeling of well being for the long haul. the ativan helped me deal with being anxious and jumpy, but i wouldn't say it did for me what the wellbutrin has done (or even other SSRI's that i've tried in temporary trials for that matter.)

I have been taking xanax very sparingly for about 6 months. I have been taking 1/2 a pill (.25mg) at bedtime about once a week to combat the nighttime anxiety. - You know, that fear to go to sleep because you're afraid a tornado, fire, or something really awful will wipe out your house while you sleep.

I have taken it occasionally during the day, but not often. While taking it I am relaxed, calm, maybe sleepy and not terribly depressed... however the next day I am bit groggy, a little depressed, and quite irritable... kind of like a hang over. I guess they are addictive because the easiest solution to the hangover effect is to take another one.

I would not think xanax alone would be good for depression. Anxiety without depression maybe. But for depression you would definitely need an AD with it.

Xanax, without a doubt. I take up to 6mg/day- and as far as 'addiction' most psychotropic drugs fit that description- with AD's possibly the worst in terms of withdrawal, 'poop-out', etc. I just get mad when people and drs. think benzos are addicting and other drugs aren't. Hope you feel better- Judy

I have a lot of anxiety with depression. I'm on Wellbutrin and Serzone right now, and take Ativan as needed. Sometimes I don't take it at all. A week or two ago, I took it every day for about 2 weeks. I like the Ativan. Calms me down quickly so that I can be in a situation w/o falling apart in front of people.

Good luck.
