Klonopin - too much causes anxiety? Need advice.

Posted by BarbaraCat on April 22, 2002, at 16:00:13

Hi Folks,
Hope you can help me with this one. My usual dose is .5 klonopin 1-2 times a day as needed to help with anxiety. Went away this weekend which disrupted my schedule, so I didn't get much sleep last night. I also had quite a large luscious Cadillac Margarita with dinner (yeah, yeah, depression-alcohol, I know. But oh God, it tasted soooo good). Woke up this morning feeling off, blah, impending depression, tired and jangly. So, wanting to feel nice and dreamy and hopefully get a nap in, I took 3 tablets within 3 hours. Instead of calm relaxation, I feel like I downed 3 espressos with a shot of chloroform. Not my intended response. This is not the first time it's happened either.

Why would a benzo cause this jangling edginess? Is klonopin of a different breed than, say, Valium which I know would knock me out.

There were some prior posts about too much Zyprexa causing akathisia, but Klonopin??

Are there any 'relaxation' meds out there that cause a calm, limp, rested state? And no, I don't think I'd be able to talk my pdoc into a script for heroin.

I suspect that the alcohol and sugar in the 'rita contributed to the singed nerve ending feeling, but why won't a common benzo soothe me instead of making the restlessness worse? Any help appreciated. - Barbara

My experience with Klonopin is different. Don't know why you get the jitters, but it takes up to 3 mg for it to kick into my system. For the most part, Klonopin is longer acting and shouldn't give you any withdrawal effects.

The way I'm feeling, I'm up for trying another 3 tabs to bring it to the 3 mg mark. That would be a good test and tomorrow should be better (I think I'm hungover - Dang!). I know we're all different, but in your experience is 3 mg a typical dose or do you just require more? I've generally heard of .5 mg at a time as the standard.

Nah, I'm just a benzo junkie. I used to take it at my discretion with a doctor who didn't overly monitor my drug intake so long as I didn't overdose (even though I did, often). I am now on Ativan during the day and Xanax for bedtime. Those seem to work. Klonopin, for some reason, didn't. Or maybe it took too long to kick in or maybe I have become very tolerant to benzos which could be my problem. I would call the dr if you think the jitters are caused by Klonopin. Are you taking anything else?

limp relaxation? I like neurontin

I like neurontin once in a while for a nice limp relaxed state. (rather than taking it as a continuous med). Can take a few tries to figure out the right personal dose. Of course some people just feel tired on it, not relaxed, and some people need a whopping dose to feel relaxed, but it seems to work for me. I find I sleep better on it than with benzodiazepines, although both can help induce sleep, with neurontin I wake up the next day happier and more clear headed (maybe just the half life shorter, not sure why). -- kate

I'm also taking Remeron 45 mg for good ol' depression, lithium 600 mg, ambien to sleep. I have fibromyalgia on top of the depression/anxiety and it would be nice to just go limp every so often.

I also take Remeron. My pdoc has told me that Remeron can cause agitation, especially at higher doses. I just added Zoloft to my meds, but even at 50 mgs. it is already too high, I am agitated and anxious. She told me that I will have to get some of the Remeron out of my system before she can up the Zoloft. Maybe it is the Remeron making you anxious, or the med you are trying interacting with the Remeron. Just an idea.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have noticed alot more alertness with 45mg vs. 30mg of Remeron and did not equate the agitation with it, but it makes sense. I was also on Zoloft for about 6 years, and tapered completely off around 5 times during that period. Each time I had to go back on because of depression, and each time had very pronounced hyper effects even at 50mg (I was typically taking 250 mg eventually). It went away after 2 weeks or so but I had to increase very slowly to prevent the always lurking panic attack. At any rate, I doubt very much that it's the Remeron that's solely responsible for the agitation - Zoloft can do it too.
