nortriptyline question

Posted by dave40252 on December 30, 2001, at 17:19:58

Hi all, my p-doc just put me on nortriptyline. My question is does nortriptyline have any effect on seritonin? The info i find is confusing some suggest it does - some say no. Anyone know for sure?

It has very little serotonin reuptake inhibition in the rat neurons, mostly norepinephrine. It has a moderate post synaptic serotonin effect, I believe on the 5HT-2 receptors. Who knows what it does in the human brain. Some people think it works at the nucleus of the cell changing mRNA synthesis.

Any particular reason you were interested serotonin effects of pamelor?

yes, my first ad was zoloft - it worked pretty good but i had sexual side effects - my family doc switched me to effexor xr (75mg)- it was GREAT for my depression but even worse side effects.... then tried remeron, wellbutrin, serzone - no side effects but they didnt work very well for the depression.... family doc referred me tp p-doc who put me on nortriptyline.

so it seemes the best stuff for me enhances serotonin, which unfortunatly causes the sexual effects. I can see why pamelor wouldnt bring on the sexual problem, but not real sure why the p-doc thinks it will work for the depression.
