Dysthymia Meds.... NEED HELP!

Posted by Christina on July 25, 2001, at 7:19:05

Help. Anybody got a miracle cure for dysthymia? I've been on several ADs (all ssri type) as well as a few mood stabilizers and Ritalin. I'm still as blah feeling as ever.
Doc wants to try Provigil next.
Anybody, Bueller, Bueller?

I started out on Celexa but after a year and a half I wasn't feeling that great any more so I went to a psyciatrist (spelling?) and he suggessted adding Wellbutrin. I've been on 20mg Celexa and 150 Wellbutrin and feel much more balanced, I guess because the meds affect different chemicals in the brain, but I'm not to the point I'd like to be so he suggested that I could up the wellbutrin dose to 150 twice a day, which I think I'm going to try!

this is my experience and I'm feeling better hope you find something that will work for you

I'd also suggest you try Wellbutrin before Provigil. If you're going for stimulants, you might as well try a stimulating AD rather than Provigil, first. :)

I'm on the same cocktail as you now. Today is my first day on it. I have noticed that I feel more calm when I take my Celexa in the morning. Since I have Sexual Compulsion (I guess a form of OCD?) my pdoc says that I should never be without an SSRI in my arsenal. The WellbutrinSR is to combat fatigue and sexual side-effects "apparent."

Hi Christina,

You say you have been on several ssri's, but have you been on Effexor too? I have dysthymia too and for me Effexor is great. I am on 225 mg a day now, and I feel like doing things again, I have much more energy and I even feel sociable again. I hope you too will find the right meds.

Take care,
Emmah

I think Provigil is a step in the right direction. Unfortunately the drugs that I think are the very best for dysthymia are not USA drugs. I have to get them from overseas mailorder. My top picks include Adrafinil and Amisulpride.

In the USA, I would limit the list of drugs to try to these:
Prozac
Prozac+Zyprexa (low dose for dysthymia)
Zyprexa (low dose)
Risperdal(low dose)
Prozac+Risperdal

In my own personal experience all the SSRIs are useless for the blahs except Prozac. Prozac is unique. All the other copycats do not resemble it.

But my all time favorites are Adrafinil and Amisulpride. After 10 years of struggling with the blahs type of depression/dysthymia, these two drugs worked miracles.

Either Nortriptyline or Desipramine could be helpful too, though side effects are sometimes a bit much. In the stimulant category, Provigil is a good choice. Another might be Adderall. If you limit your search to just the drugs mentioned in this post, I think you may find good results quicker than any other way.

Never had luck w/ SSRIs alone, but Zoloft and Lamictal together seem to be helping. Sometimes I take stimulants, too. (Provigil is just another stimulant, in my experience.)

As a complete novice to Adrafinil and Amisulpride can you suggest any Web links for a sound introductory understanding these meds?

I thought that the MAOIs are also considered to have some effect on dysthymia. I believe that the studies on this were not really wholly convincing but even so, they still seem to suggest that the MAOIs may be of some potential help.

I have dysthymia too and I have been through several SSRIs and have found that I am very sensitive to their side effects. The SNRI Reboxetine (available here in the UK) was very good but again some of the side effects prevented me continuing. I tried moclobemide (600mg) and it was truly wonderful but it pooped out after a few months.

I think there is some belief that dysthymia is related to personalty and personality disorders. Maybe that is why you suggest Zyprexa and Risperadal?

Hi Dave,
To learn more about Adrafinil and Amisulpride, there are two different routes you could take.

The first is to do an online search on either word. Try several different search engines, because you will find different info on different engines.

The second is to go www.mentalhealth.com. Follow the prompts for medication research. When you get to the point where you have to choose a drug to research, choose any drug on their list. Doesn't matter. It will bring you to the research page. Once you get there, erase the drug in the box at the top of the page, and type in whatever you want to reseearch. For example, "Adrafinil", "Amisulpride", "Amisulpride AND dysthymia", etc. You can refine your searches with two words or more by connecting them with the word AND captitalized.

Spend a few hours doing both of the above and you will soon be an expert on both drugs.

Based on what you have said about your trials with other drugs, I think Adrafinil and/or Amisulpride are very promising candidates for you. Adrafinil is easy to get, and you will uncover places to order it when you do an online search on it. Your good response to Reboxetine is a good clue that Adrafinil may prove very helpful to you. Amisulpride is harder to get, but low doses of either Zyprexa or Risperdal are similar.

Hope this is helpful.

How has that cocktail been working for you? I've been on zoloft, zoloft w/ elavil, prozac, st. john's wort, wellbutrin, and for the past several months - 400 mg wellbutrin and 225 mg effexor, with an occassional ritalin for an energy boost. Like everything else I've tried in the past, the current mix seems to have lost its effectiveness after several months. my dr. now suggests tapering off on the effexor and switching to the celexor with the wellbutrin. i wanted to know how you're doing on that.

I'm about to change my cocktail from wellbutrin & effexor to wellbutrin & celexa. How's that been working for you?
