Lamictal and Headaches?

Posted by Kingfish on August 6, 2001, at 10:06:13

I started Lamictal about two weeks ago - 25 mg every other day, then 25 mg every day, and now 50 mg every day for a week, then 75 mg, etc.

I haven't noticed any side effects except for a headache everyday. Some days it subsides after the mornings, others I have to take something to get rid of it.

Has anyone else experienced this and does it go away?

Thanks!

- K.

Hi,

My only side effect from Lamictal was headaches, and at least for me they took a while, maybe a month, to go away. They weren't bad, just annoying. I think it's one of the most common side effects. Try ibuprofen -- that helped me.

I haven't had the headaches, but I have been very tired in the morning. What time of day do you take the medication? Also, are you taking this with anything else? I am currently on 450 mg of effexor and my doctor is introducing lamictal with the hope of weaning me off the effexor. If you are taking only lamictal do you find it working for you? At what dose? I just started 75mg on a schedule similar to yours.

Sierra:

I'm adding Lamictal to 40 mg Prozac, 2400 - 3000 mg Neurontin, and 250 mg Topamax. I am currently at 25 mg of Lamictal in the morning and 25 mg at night. Next week it will be 25 in the morning and 50 at night. Then I go to see my pdoc.

I'm feeling pretty awful but it might actually be the flu. How can you tell? ;) I'm really tired still (this was due to the Topamax, though, which is what we're trying to counteract).

I don't feel anything too different yet, except for the slight headaches, and just generally rather ill the last few days.

It would be nice to get another Lamictal thread going though, and keep track of new people on it. I do anticipate using it as an adjunct stabilizer at least, or perhaps replacing the Topamax, although that has worked well for me except for the sedation. (I'm Bipolar).

Anita:

Thank you for your post. May I ask if Lamictal ended up helping you?

Hi,

Yes, Lamictal helps me immensely, primarily with mood stabilization and also for depression and anxiety. I've been taking 100mg/day for 3 years now. I also take Zoloft and Risperdal. With these three meds, I've improved a hell of a lot.

Is Risperdal for sleeping? I just ask because I've had trouble sleeping since switching from Celexa to Prozac and since adding the Lamictal.

I had to go back down from 50 mg to 25 mg because I had flu symtoms (thought I had the flu at first). They stopped as soon as I lowered the dose. Calling my pdoc tomorrow.

Thanks again for your help.

I'm taking Risperdal (0.5-1mg hs) to help with sleep (may also have some mood-stabilizing qualities).

I definitely had daily headaches soon after starting Lamictal (I remember at the time swallowing plenty of Ibuprofen, something I don't normally take) but as with Anita, they seemed to fade after a month or two.

The flu-like symptoms don't sound too pleasant tho'...

Thanks for your input, Jah. I can't recall if you've continued Lamictal. I know you've mentioned what you take - I'm sorry, I've been rather "foggy" since starting Prozac for some reason.

If you've continued, can you let me know if it's helped? (I think you'll be repeating this - again sorry. :( )...

Thanks.

Boy can I relate to the fogginess thing, but this is one area where Lamictal is actually (mildly) helpful. I'm taking 250mg but am moving back up again on the orders of my new (& soon to be ex- ,I think) pdoc. It has mild AD properties for me; about the same as VPA & Zyprexa. It's not great but is definitely better than nothing. Ymmv etc etc..

I'd be interested to see how yr Lamictal+Prozac goes; I added Prozac myself a few weeks ago. Started Wellbutrin 2day.

Good luck.

J.

Thanks Jah. (n/p)
