Cyprenil (L-deprenyl) with Manerix (moclobemide)?

Posted by jackiechan on August 2, 2001, at 1:24:15

Hello,

I just started taking moclobemide 2 days ago, and my liquid cyprenil came in today.

Can I safely take these together, or will I explode into tiny little pieces all over the wall?

Thanks,

Jackie

You run the possibility of a life-threatening serotonin syndrome with that combo. There's gotta be something else you can take along with your moclobemide, like reboxetine or desipramine.

Thanks, I am glad I waited..!

I really want to try out the cyprenyl, and was wondering how long I will need to wait if I stop taking the moclobemide? I have taken only about a total of 4 150mg pills so far over the last 2 days.

You need a two-week washout period: http://www.dr-bob.org/tips/split/Switching-to-and-from-MAOI.html

Thanks, the link you gives an even more specific answer for moclobemide. Half life is quite short. It seems for this particular one 2 days might work?

Moclobemide, a RIMA (reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase), is far safer than the classical and irreversible MAOIs (tranylcypromine or phenelzine) relative to drug/food interactions. This has been demonstrated with tyramine administration in healthy volunteers as well as with experiments in animals. However, moclobemide does increase serotonin levels for 24 hours after a single dose in the rat brain. With repeated administration there are no cumulative effects in contrast to the classical MAOIs. The half life of moclobemide is short (around 3 hours), but irrespective of this it is safer to wait 48 hours after the last dose of moclobemide before switching to fluoxetine.

Personally, in your shoes, I would stay with just Moclobemide for a few weeks by itself, and then if desired add Deprenyl later. Sometimes it just creates problems and confusion when multiple meds are started too close together. It's hard to tell what is doing what.

Keep in mind that at low doses (up to approximately 10mg a day), Deprenyl will primarly increase dopamine levels. At higher doses it will also increase serotonin levels. That's where danger could come in. So caution is advised. Just go low and slow and it should be alright. That way if you have any adverse reactions they can be contained and dealt with before getting out of hand. Serotonin syndrome, or serotonin overload, which is dangerous and sometimes deadly, is the primary risk to look out for.

I can't imagine why you'd want to do both. They are each aggitating drugs. They are both MAOs which I believe are not to be taken together.

Hi John, I hear you know a lot about Adrafinil?

Hi John,

I see from someone else's post that you have had great results with adrafinil. Are you taking anythinhg else with it as well? Are you using it for an anti-depressant or just a stimulant? I am experimenting with a couple different antidepressants to try and find something that might work for me. I have tried the many and not happy with anything as of yet. The adrafinil does sound more like something I might do well on, since my main problem is lack of energy and motivation anyway. Not really super depressed as far as that goes, and am very sensitive to just about any meds. Hoping to find relief with minimal doses of something. I will say that so far, the Manerix is about the best thing I have taken so far, but I was pretty hyped on trying cyprenil as well. Tried Wellbutrin, and seemed great at first, but it made me dumber than a post. If it's true I can use them both (man&cyp) togeter in low dosage, I'll give that a shot. I was only planning on taking a couple of megs cyp. to start anyway, just to see if I get an immediate reaction or not.

Don't worry, I'll be very careful! Thanks for the help, I'll call you from the emergency room! Just kidding.

Jackie...
