14 year old son on effexor xr

Posted by Gail on April 24, 2001, at 5:55:07

Hi
My 14 year old son has been on paxil & depakote. Then he was on wellbutrin & prozac. They didn't work for his Depression. Today he starts on effexor xr 37.5mg's & wellbutrin 200mg's another 37.5mg's of effexor xr added after a week . I am really worried about the safety of this combination. Also the withdrawals. I would really appreciate your thoughts on this. He is so young. I worry about all the medication. Thank You

Effexor + Wellbutrin is a nice combination because it will have an effect on serotonin, norepinephrine, _and_ dopamine--thus maximizing his chances at relief from suffering. Plus, the Wellbutrin may cancel out the drowsiness and anorgasmia of the Effexor.

Gail

I was fifteen when I first started suffering from depression. All I had was therapy, which looking back is hard for a teenager to grasp. I had asked for medication, but hadn't got anything from the family doctor even though the psychologist supported the idea.

I'm really glad that there is more help out there for teenagers who need help. I sometimes have wondered how much of a difference it could have had for me regarding the distress that these disorders can cause.

I've been on effexor now since October and it has made a big positive improvement for me. (I started therapy again three years ago.) The side effects were a nuisance for me the first four months. Having a supportive family makes a big difference.

Best Wishes to you and your family!
Willow

I let my son read your letter. He has been so depressed. He has been giving up on medication.Although he is still taking it. After reading it he said he won't give up yet. Thank you. I hope everything works out well for you. I will hold good thoughts for you. Good Luck. Gail.

Like Willow, I had many years of depression. In teenagers, it is most distressing because of the hormonal issues I would think. But please, don't give up. There are tons of good medications out there for depression or bi-polar. They will work well if you give them a chance. The problem is that it takes time for them to work so there will be some further suffering. Having a good support system will help. Perhaps there is a group support program in place where you live. Other teenagers? That I think could help your son to see other kids with the same issues. Please hang in there buddy, we're all rooting for ya.
