Considering Taking Celexa

Posted by KRK on October 24, 2000, at 16:14:02

I have been recommended by my doctor to take Celexa after he diagnosed me with moderate depression. I have been looking at websites and reading your comments and am concerned about the diminished sexual drive and the effects of alchohol. I drink five nights a week with usually three beers and a burbon. Does anyone drink this much with Celexa? I am 30 years of age and very sexually active. Any feedback anyone could give me would be extremely appreciated.

Hi,

I take celexa and found that for the first couple of weeks every beer felt like four. However (as many others will testify) I can know drink a lot more than I could before I took the drug. I dont drink often but when I do I like to have 5 or 6 and it is fine. I can also drink whisky in good amounts too. Its not that you'll pass out with alcohol and Celexa just that you'll feel more drunk than usual because they have a slight sedative effect for the first week or two.

In short, take it easy for the first couple of weeks (you get the same effect from one beer and thus save money) and then you'll be able to drink like you used to.

You might be better trying Wellbutrin instead, since it usually has prosexual effects. You could mix alcohol with Celexa, though it's recommmended not to. It's just that you might find the medication and alcohol combined have an exaggerated effect, and probably oversedation.

In Celexa's family of medications, Prozac has been documented clinically as having the least amount of side effects. It isn't normally sedating either. Of course, some people do have sexual side effects with Prozac, but at least the odds would be more in your favor. A low dose of Prozac for me actually increases my desire, increases ability, increases sensation, and lengthens the sexual experience just the right amount of time. Celexa, Paxil, Zoloft all had the opposite effect. They lowered desire, lowered ability, numbed sensation, and took an exhausting laborious amount of time to finish the sexual experience, if I was able to do it at all.

Remeron or Serzone are generally sex-friendly, but you would likely find them way too sedating, especially if combined with alcohol.

Wellbutrin might be your best bet. It can be rough to start with. Whatever your doctor tells you is the lowest dose to start with, cut in half instead. Work up slowly. We really shouldn't be drinking at all while on these meds. But if one must, Wellbutrin might be a better choice due to its stimulating and prosexual properties.

Alcohol is a depressant and could be part of the reason you are experiencing depression in the first place. I know people who have had very bad effects from drinking with antidepressants and do not recommend it. To be honest, you sound like you have a drinking problem that you need to address. There are tests to determine a drinking problem, too. Just trying to help. I used to have a drinking problem and am glad to have quit now. I never regretted quitting either. No offense intended and good luck to you.

I've never taken celexa, but I have taken Wellbutrin for years and I don't think it mixes well at all with alcohol. I've always been a fairly light drinker anyway, but I get very lightheaded pretty quickly when I drink at around the same time as I take one of my doses of WB. I've sometimes addressed this by skipping a dose in the evening if I know I'm going to be drinking, but I wouldn't just assume that you can continue to drink at the same level without enhanced effect. ksvt
