The pdoc of one of my Bipolar II buddies started him on
Neurontin (Gabapentin). I've seen a dramatic change
in his mood, i.e., greater stability.I'm currently on Lamictal (Lamotrigine) as my mood
stabilizer, but was wondering if any one has used
Neurontin with good or bad results.Thanks-
PB and J.C. (my dog)
P.S. I have to include my dog because he tolerates me
with an unwavering phlegmatic temperament.

Yes it's been successful for me (1500 day)
I also use a tiny bit of zoloft and if
my depression increases I'll have to switch
ADs because on too much zoloft I go manic.
I also use klonopin prn. and 25 mg. of
elavil just because...to sleep I think.

Lizzie:
Thanks for the info. I actually saw my pdoc today
(13 June) and asked her about Neurontin. She thinks
Luvox is a better mood stabilizer, but that some of
her patients have responded well to Neurontin. It
looks like I will phase out my Lamictal - she wants
to wait until that dosage has decreased some before
adding another mood stabilizer, so your input is much
appreciated.I also take Klonapin when I get hypomanic. Works for me!

I found it helpful for social phobia, but the memory loss and spaciness were quite severe. Have you noticed these side effects? found some way to deal with them?

No, no side effects at all--though I have
always been spacey (left keys in front
door overnight, lose things, unable to locate
important papers...) Neurontin hasn't
affected that--I think it slows me down
enough so I don't multitask *too* much
and then forget what I was doing.

Luvox, hmm? I'll ask my pdoc when I see her
next-not til after the 4th of july now--I reckon
that if things are going well
(and they are) that she'll want to maintain
status quo, which is cool. The side effects
of neurontin aren't bad for me--I DON'T want
to get fat from my meds and neurontin isn't
causing me any(much) weight gain. AND the big
bonus is the migraines have lessened a lot!!
One bad one in 6 mos--an awesome record for me!
