work ????

Posted by harry b. on April 27, 2000, at 10:10:01

I met with my boss yesterday. He took me to lunch and
we had a 2 hr conversation. I told him I'd like to
return to work on a part time basis in a few weeks
and transition to a full time basis over the course of
a month, depending on how it works out. He was suportive
and agreed.

I'm not certain I'm ready to return but feel I've got to
make the effort.

I've been making strides in my effort to understand and
recover from the loss of my surrogate family. However,
I was in therapy before that event hapened so there are
other issues and a long term depression to continue to
deal with.

I've decided to leave the hospital outpatient program
and return to my old therapist. I will have to find a
new pdoc during this process.

I'm not happy with my meds and especially not with my continued
low energy and lethargy.

Getting some insight and coming to a few revelations
about the dynamics of my relationship with my lost
surrogate family has helped my mood dramatically.
I have learned some coping skills and I've begun to
apply them to my advantage.

Part time sounds great. Clarify your workload expectations with your boss so they are realistic and you both know what to expect, hopefully avoiding any conflicts later on.

Go for it. You sound like you are taking charge of making plans for yourself and that is a good sign.

Thanks Noa,

I guess I am trying to take charge, but I'll be
the first to say that I feel like I'm walking a
wire with no safety net.

Hi Janice,

Thanks and, yes, you and others here are a kind of
safety net.

Today I see my current pdoc for the last time (he
will only treat patients who are in the outpatient
program) but I have not yet set an appt with anyone
to take his place. Gotta do that soon.

OK, I took care of that today, Noa. Now, a problem.

When I went into the hospital in Feb. I filed the
paperwork for FMLA. I have not received a response
telling me my request was accepted or denied. Should
I have received a response? At my workplace we have
gone thru 3 HR managers in the past year. Presently,
one of the in-house accountants is filling in.

Today I got a call from the shop manager. He said
he was told by the President of the Co. to get my
vehicle. One of my perks is a new (99) vehicle. It
has been setting in my driveway these past few months.
It seems odd that the Pres would take it back
just 2 days after I met with my boss, the Executive
VP, to discuss my return. The Exec VP left on
vacation last evening, out of state, so I can not
ask him about it. I called the Pres but he is 'in
meetings all day' and can't take my call.

Is anyone familiar with FMLA? And especially with
the employer's responsibilities and obligations?

I'm angry now. The Pres and I have butted heads
regularly over the past 7 years. The Exec VP has
usually been my ally. I worked hard to earn the
privilege of a company vehicle and it's probably
worth $4000.00 per year, especially since the Co.
also supplies the gasoline for my 100 mile a day
commute.

I thought I was protected by the law but now I'm
not certain.

I'd appreciate any advice.

Harry,

I don't know anything about the FMLA, which is kind of embarrasing, because long ago, in school, I wrote a policy analysis paper on the topic, before it was actually sumbitted and passed. Hopefully someone else here will know. I think, tho, there is probably a toll free number in the federal government you can call for help. Check the gov pages of the phone book, or online. You might call ERISA info, or somethng along those lines. Good luck.

Harry,

I presently work for two employment law attorneys in Florida. The FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act of 1993) is available on the internet in its entirety. Just copy and paste the following URL into your browser:

http://www.dol.gov/dol/esa/public/regs/statutes/whd/fmla.htm

If you haven't read the FMLA already, I definitely encourage you to do so since knowledge is power.

Snowie
