Body temperature changes w/depression?

Posted by Sean on April 3, 2000, at 11:55:40

Hello everybody,

Starting in Late January, I noticed a low grade fever
(about 99.8) which built through the day but ended
around midnight. I first assumed this was some kind of
"bug" and tried to take it easy. After about a month,
however, I went to a doc and had all sorts of tests
run (including Lyme). All came back normal.

I finally went to my p-doc and he theorized a dysregulation
of my temp/circadian center and I started zoloft. It
seems to be helping, but I was really caught blind by
this "prodroma". Oddly, I have had two other strange
fevers which lasted about two weeks and did not result
in a depressive episode. Very strange.

Has anybody else experienced a "fever of unexplained
origin" as part of a depressive episode? I'm very
curious about this.

Sean.

Sean,
I have temp changes that go in both directions. Sometimes I'm 97.9., next day I'm 99.6. But these changes never seem to last more than a few hours at a time. Have you been experiencing extreme tiredness or exhaustion? My doc says that can cause you to be more susceptible(?) to colds and flu like symptoms. I've noticed that some of the temp changes seem to come with depressive states, but I don't know if one has anything to do with the other.....

Peace,
Greg

Greg -

Yes, I had major brain fog, exhausted, chills, was light
sensitive, and generally achey. Forced myself to
go to work, could barely make my own meals when
back home. It really, really, sucked...

Sean,
My God, I'm not alone! I've had (and still have periodically) the exact same symptoms that you are describing. I take Wellbutrin for depression, which really seems to work for me. I take Xanex for anxiety and panic attacks. I'm not recommending these to you, just giving you info. Yes, it really does suck! When you don't have the strength to even take care of yourself it can be mentally destructive. But keep on keeeping on, with a good doc and a lot of hard work it WILL get better!

Hang tough man,
Greg

Glad I'm not alone, but likewise do not wish for
anyone else to suffer so! My doc mentioned
Wellbutrin actually. Zoloft has made me hypomanic
in the past and I've had to stop. Right now I'm
also on Neurontin and have yet to go into the
stratosphere (although I really want to...) Never
had any true mania, but feel I've got some kind
of bipolar spectrum thing going on. I also have
panic on rare occasions. I don't get the heart
racing thing anymore, more like sparks shooting
around in my head or something, waves of fear.

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it.

Sean.

hi Sean,

I often experienced a low-grade fever with my depression. Before realizing I was bipolar, I thought the highs were reality and the lows were a reoccuring flu?

I am no longer aware of any fevers.

Janice
doubt I told you anything you didn't know.

Janice -

Thanks very much for the reply. I am currently on
Neurontin and Zoloft and doing better, so I guess
this was an "aura" of a depressive phase. May I
ask what meds work for you (on the off chance that
there might some kind of similar chemistry)?

I'm not all that thrilled with the side effects of
Zo and Neuro.

Sean.

Hi Sean,
I have rapid cycling bipolar. I don't take any ADs because they only make the cycling worse (even with mood stabilizers). But I've heard as far as anti-depressants go, Wellbutrin is the least likely to increase the cycling.

Currently, I'm taking 1200mg of lithium. It works to a certain extent--it gets rid of the mania and the lowest part of the depression, but it seems to be leaving me with alot of low to mid grade depression. No plans to try any ADs. I'm very close to giving up on medications as offering any real solution for me.

Sean, I'm going to be practising sleep therapy and light therapy. They seem to be very effective for rapid cyclers. I'm also going to be changing my diet in the next 6 months (cutting out caffeine, dairy, sugar and white flour).

Please let me know if you'd like more information on this. I have some, and could point you to some good articles.

Good luck, Janice
