I love Maine! That's where Stephen King is from! Have you ever met him?
I also love kids and animals. I'd love to have a houseful of both some day.

Thank you! I love my name, although I mostly get called Lauren. There is pretty much a Laurel Street in every city and town in America. In fact, I was named after the street where my parents took lamaze classes.

lol. I didn't say I did it well! But that's the only way I can do it *at all*. I am seriously rhythm challenged and have learned to clap silently so that at least I don't disturb anyone.

Three kids in three years? I'd think there was something seriously wrong with you if you *didn't* have mood disturbances!

My one knocked me for a loop and I didn't recover for nearly a year.

How old are yours now?

TexasChick, please don't wish a housefull of children and animals upon yourself. It's a dream that noone with any one of us should try to keep up with, having insufficient brain chemistry as we all do. I've seen other women with many children and animals look at me and smile, as if everything is just honkydory, but you can always see the insanity in their eyes...

Yes, Dinah, I did have three children in three years, three in diapers at one time, and I have had three, count them, THREE nervous breakdowns!! No wonder I ended up at the hospital the other night, and my parents took my kids for a few days. I feel much better now. I think I just needed a quiet house for a few days.

Oddly, My name is Scott and I live in Vermont.

I'm 36, father of 2 children (1 each, 6 and 8 years old); I work in telecommunications for a profession, but prefer being outside running a chainsaw or digging a ditch. I like to "work".

I play guitar and have for many years. I also like archery, hiking, mountain biking, and collecting weird looking rocks.

I do a lot of woodworking, and like to build things. I make bookcases, cabinets, chests, and birdhouses... I like working with my hands. I also carve wood, and even though I'm not very good at it, it's a satisfying endeavor.

Basically, I have to be busy every waking moment of every day. Thankfully, I have an awful lot to distract me. Work (meaning my job) is the hardest place to be, because when it slows down, there's only so much busywork to be done.

I've been a Babbler for about a month, and have taken some decent advice from people. I don't post an awful lot, but enough where people recognize my screen name. :)

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time. Its good that your parents were able to take your kids while you got a much needed rest. I realize kids are a huge responsibility and can be extremely draining (especially three in a row like that!). But they are such precious, innocent little souls who are completely dependent on those who care for them. They aren't yet damaged by the world around them and their presence makes you see things in a wholly different light. I hope you can find a way to get some extra help with them, it sounds like you need it

I like rocks too. My favorite is one that looks like slate wrapped around a big chunk of quartz. It's about the size of 2 fists together. My mom found it in the smoky mountains. I have tons of smooth beach pebbles in all colors.

I'm 31, female, and who am I kidding? If anyone really wants to know who I am, I can't imagine they haven't figured it out already. My name is Laurie.

I live in a suburb of Chicago. I aspire to be a suburban soccer mom one day. No minivan, though.

I'm not quite sure about my dx, yet. Not working very hard to figure it out, though. I just know I'm depressed a lot of the time.

I have a husband and a 22-month old son. One dog - a Cairn Terrier named Mabel.

I'm a tax accountant.

I used to play the piano when I was a kid.

I like to put my pictures in scrapbooks when I have time, but I haven't even made it past my son's first day at home in his baby book. I guess I'm just trying to live in the moment with him :).

I write with my left hand, but do almost everything else with my right hand.

I love to travel and I've been to Japan and Mexico, but not to Europe, yet. I would love to visit Greece or Italy. (And of course, Guam.)

Thanks for the thread, Jeff!

The coolest rock I have is similar to yours. It is a conglomerate of black shale slate and white quartz, and the quarts is so pure it looks like glass, it's clear all the way through. When I put it in a window and the sunlight hits it just right, it acts like a prism and refracts the light in 2 different directions (there is a slight fracture inside that splits the light).

The oldest rock I have (oldest meaning how long I have had it) is an unopened geode that I found when I was 10 or 11. It has a cracked seam where you can shine a light into it and see the crystals inside, but I decided to never open it. That started my interest in rocks. When I was in high school I took geology very seriously and had my sights set on becoming a Vulcanist (no, that has nothing to do with Star Trek... ha) but, as everyone knows, life happens and dreams change to meet the demands of "right now".

But it is a small matter. I still love finding unusual looking rocks, it gets me out hiking through mountain streams and riverbeds, and it's the most inexpensive hobby I have ever had.

It's cool to meet another "rock fan".

I like rocks too. My grandmother has this huge rock about as big as a basketball that looks exactly like a giant brain. We also have one my brother picked up that is perfectly sliced about 5 or 6 times, but yet still together. It was on a hill, and apparently the water running down hill sliced it that way. I especially like quartz, my grandmother has some pink ones that I think are so pretty. I also like multi-colored speckled rocks. Its so cool what nature comes up with sometimes.

I am 47, female, separated from my husband. 3 kids, daughters almost 21 and 16 and a son almost 19.

I live in NH (New England seems well represented).

By training, I am a software engineer. But while I'm disabled (by Major Depression) I work at the local library 10 hours a week.

I have 2 cocker spaniels, Sterling and Patches. I don't know what I would do without them.

My other passions are figure skating (doing it more than watching it) and music (playing it or singing it).

I've been on Babble for a year now!

This seems to be a good way to start on this board. I recently started posting on psychobabble.

I'm 32, female, and I don't care about my dx. (Of course, I say that after I frantically looked it up and didn't like what I read.)

I'm a mess -- neurotic, obsessive, emotional -- but my heart is usually in the right place.

I'm a writer by trade and hobby. (This may be ironic when you see my many mistakes -- my brain is going so much faster than my fingers or my willingness to edit!)

I have a husband, child, and cat.

I read The New Yorker for the cartoons.

Cheerio.

i'm karen (or karen kay, or kk or many other names.. another thing, i realized recently that my old man's middle name is a swear word when i'm angry.. and it's the BIG one too!!!)

obviously i swear alot

according to my peers, i'm 'cocky' and 'sarcastic' (well, HELLO!!! you would be too if you looked this good!)

after a full year of german, i've come to realize i can't speak a word of it (my prof winces when i am called on and try to speak) and i still have another year to look forward to

i have absolutely no artistic ability. i can't draw, i can't sing, i can't type (is that an art?), i can't write, i can't paint, i can't play an instrument (except the kazoo and that's at 2nd grade level).

i can multitask, but i become confused. i list that on my resume (which i will use when i apply for the gas station cashier position this summer) however, if i attempt to do two things at one time i usually become confused and end up really messing things up. it gets really bad if i am talking on the phone and IMing, especially if i don't want to talk on the phone, as i usually complain about the person on the phone, become confused and say what i should be typing. this is a hassle, as what i'm typing is usually "i wish my friend on the phone would shut up!" my friend on the phone is usually not amused.

sometimes i think something but don't mean to say it, as it isn't nice. however, i'll get halfway through, realize i'm saying it, mumble a bit, get red-faced, and then cover up with a quick "huh!" i don't know how i get away with it, but i do. honestly, i can recall several times where it's happened that i've thought that i've been thinking something but i've actually been saying it. midsentence i'll realize i'm talking and get tonguetied, do the quick "huh" and my friends usually just look at me. (and i swear, i wasn't on drugs either!) usually i'm charming so i can get away with it. or maybe i'm just cocky? (can you tell i'm bitter about that evaluation? the professor didn't think i was cocky. she thought i made great use of humor. stupid college students. they don't know their (^(^%$#*#$ from their elbows. and to think, i didn't deduct anything from their grades. i wouldn't dream of messing with anyone's grades. GRRR!!)

i'm clumsy. i almost always have bruises on my legs.

i love the water. but hate drinking water. go figure.

Okay, here's me
37 year old female
Love to garden (although not necessarily skilled at design) and hence the screen name
I am studying to be a clinical psychologist, so I don't want to give my name just in case.
One husband, one dog
Dx: atypical depression--doing much better on Nardil
I live in Ohio--if you don't like the weather just wait 10 minutes, and don't get me started about the governor.
Absolutely dreading the 17-year cicada invasion due to start in a couple of weeks. Anyone want a houseguest for about six weeks?
Hobbies include reading, gardening (duh), knitting, Indy car racing (watching of course, but I can dream, can't I?), Tennessee football, and laughing.
My talent: singing Blue Christmas in my Elvis voice.

Great thread, Jeff!

Ooh, I've bookmarked this thread! Awesome.

I'll start by saying that I'm not comfortable revealing too much identifying information here on the board where the whole world can see it, but if you're interested for some crazy reason, meet me in the chat room (http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/psycho-babble-open/) and I'll tell you my real name, the state in which I live, my major in school, my dog's name and breed, etc.

I'm 22/female.

I am currently attending college in the southwest, but my home is about 2,000 miles away (to the northeast), and I plan to return there in a couple of weeks.

Right now, I am an engineering student, but if all goes according to plan, in 2 weeks I will be an engineer. (An unemployed engineer.)

I don't know my current diagnoses, though I intend to ask some time in the next two weeks... I have been diagnosed with depression by multiple professionals over the last 8 years or so, as well as ADD when I was younger. I also have a self-diagnosis of social anxiety disorder and/or avoidant personality disorder.

Right now, I live alone in a dorm, though I share a bathroom with a girl who frequently forgets to flush. At home, I live with my parents, a younger brother (who is also in college), a younger sister (in high school), and my dog (we also have 2 or 3 deceased hamsters buried in the back yard). I also have an older brother who is a lawyer.

Talents? Hmm. I'm pretty good at screwing things up -- I've been told that I have something like the Midas touch, except everything that I touch turns to excrement instead of gold. In the area of useless knowledge, I memorized all the prepositions, as well as all of the chemical elements.

As for hobbies, I’ve dabbled in a lot of things, but I rarely have the commitment to get really involved in anything, and I lose interest quickly. Currently, I volunteer with an animal rescue organization.

*Female. 40's---I like to say "early 40's" but I admit that I'm gettin into "middle" territory really.
*Run of the mill job but I like working, I've always liked working, even when I hate it, cuz I like to be productive within a structured setting
*Love my time off, too.
*Love to read, but often find it hard to sit and focus long enough. Then, suddenly, I will have a big spurt of reading energy and devour a bunch of books in a short time.
*5 year member of Psychobabble, which has been a real lifesaver for me.
*DX=Double depression and hypothyroidism, but realizing more and more that there has always been a lot of anxiety there too. I get somewhat obsessive when I have to sort out detailed stuff or make lots of decisions (example---I bought a zillion quarts of paint to test colors before I settled on paint colors for my apt. and the process drove me crazy)
*Pretty much in remission, at least for the major depression part of the double D. Even the dysthymia part is pretty mild at this point.
*been in therapy for decades. I guess I'm a lifer--who said that earlier this week?
*Love spring weather, and love the ample daylight this time of year. Oh yeah, did I mention I also have S.A.D.?
*Like trees and plants and birds and the breeze.
*Love the ocean. Love to go to the beach just before dawn and watch the sky and the dolphins (if I'm lucky) and the many birds and even before the birds really come out, I love watching the little sand crabs that look like a gifted cartoon animation artist dreamed them up with their cute faces watching me as they scurry across the sand and love watching them busily scurrying or digging, leaving their little mounds of freshly dug sand behind them.
*Love swimming in lakes (clean lakes of course).
*I like to hear the train whistle in the early morning and at night.
*Love to look up at the sky on a clear night and am repeatedly amazed at being greeted by that big bright planet about 45 degrees up in the evening sky. It amazes me and makes me happy.
*unmarried, no kids. Ambivalent about kids. Always used to be positive I wanted and would have kids. Lately not so sure I could hack it, even if it were possible. Who knows, maybe someday I'll adopt. But first I gotta take better care of my own everyday self.
*Not so good at multitasking--distractible, get overwhelmed.
*Kind of a trial and error learner--have difficulty visualizing things, so I have to try it out to know what it will look like (like obsessively trying paint colors, for example). This makes everything very time consuming, of course.
*It's easy for me to lose track of time.
*Originally I was one of those people who always showed up early. Now I really wish I could just be on time.
*Hated to write as a kid--used to have total panic attacks about writing assignments. Then one day as an adult I discovered that I am a decent writer and sometimes I actually like it. At work, people come to me for writing help now. If my high school English teacher could only see that!
*Like crossword puzzles and scrabble
*was addicted to online freecell and solitaire and minesweeper, but am fine since I eradicated them from my computer.
*I also read the New Yorker for the cartoons, but lo and behold, I discovered I like a lot of the articles, too! These are good when I have a lot of time, like when visiting my parents, who are subscribers.
*like offbeat movies
*like to watch This Old HOuse and listen to Click and Clack the Tap It Brothers---Tom and Ray, and love "this American Life", but perhaps my favorite is "Selected Shorts". I love to have a good story read to me by a good story teller.
*My life is full of unfinished stuff--from the still unfinished kitchen to the wires handing from the cieling where light fixtures should be to the birthday card I bought two and a half years ago for someone and forgot to send to the many projects I started and never finished....shall I go on?
*Historically, I've always been pretty timid but once (about 5 years ago) I took a big stand on something important--people thought what I did had been hard to do but it was actually very easy to do because it was so very obviously the right thing to do. Dealing with the aftermath was not so easy, though. But now it's ok and it seems like a long time ago at this point. I guess I haven't been thinking about it as much as time goes by, but it's interesting that it is coming up now as I write this post for this "who we are" thread--I guess it is still part of how I define myself. I guess it is something I am proud of--like I encountered a big test of character and proved myself. Now if I can only manage to feel like all my other character issues can get to where I want them to be!
