> I have taken my 4th dose today..so far I don't feel much like eating (A GREAT THING) and I do feel as though my energy level and coping skills are slowly returning!! Any comments..would be appreciated!!!!! However I am still getting hot flushes..but he said give it 2 weeks!

Hi Helaine,

I've been reading posts here for a month, probably a thousand of them, and I don't remember anybody being prescribed Effexor distinctly for menopause. Many people have taken Paxil or Zoloft and many other things for depression, but typically people who take Effexor have it because of depression PLUS anxiety. It can also help with OCD.

When you mention having increased energy and coping skills, I would hazard to say that that is a placebo effect (which isn't bad either) because the effexor builds up in your brain slowly and it takes at least 2 weeks to start to feel a difference, at least that is what psychiatrists and most posters say. I didn't really feel any change over even a month. Right away I did feel 'less overwhelmed' but I think that is because I finally found a kind dentist. I still did not have energy to do things until yesterday, I started my first dose of 150, up from 112, and had 2 iced teas, and last night and today my brain is just jumping! To some people, caffeine really magnifies the anti-depressant effect. Also, some people get the opposite reaction to drinking alcohol, the next day, you feel slow and unenergetic again, as if the alcohol wiped out the antidepressant for the next 2 days.

I don't see how Effexor will help you with hot flashes because MANY posters here have a side effect of mucho sweating. Others dont. Some take their effexor in the morning so they can sleep at night, some take it at night so they wont be tired all day.

I dont' know how many people have NO side effects, because they have no reason to really come here to find out about it. I, myself, have noticed no side effects, except for really feeling awake during the day for a change.

Are you seeing a family doctor or psychiatist? From reading so many posts, I would say that family doctors have to know about so many things, they only know a little about everything - jack of all trades, master of none. So they do not know that there are bad withdrawal effects unless you taper off VERY slowly, some people who know they are really sensitive even go so far as opening capsules and dividing into halves, thirds, and quarters! If you forget to take it one day, you may get very bad side effects too. And some keep their patients at the beginning 37.5 dose without increasing. Psychiatrists know more about each different drug and the subleties of when to use what and how to change dosing to minimize side effects.

Other posters are on Effexor during menopause, but it is not BECAUSE they are in menopause.

That is all my own opinion gleaned from reading the posts that I have read. Hope that gives you a start... Yankeegirl

Dear Yankeegirl:
Thank you so much for taking the time to respond.Just a foot note I love the yankees too!
My family dr. prescribed it to me but I am also seeing a psychologist as well. I was very confused when he told me it will help my hot flashes seeing one of the side effect are hot flashes. However, he told me not to read the side effects as if I am going to listen to him..ha!However, I did just learn that a counsin of mine was taking effexor for her hot flashes and she said it was a miracle. So, I guess I will have to wait and see.
I do take it 1st thing in the morning because I don't want to have problems sleeping. I think my energy level is going up because I am eating less and that in itself does make me feel better. I also am suffering from depression and was on zoloft,paxil,prozac..you name it I took it! I stopped for many years..but the menopause seems to have brought on all the old feelings again.
Thank you once again!!!!!!!!!

Hi Helaine,

I can see why your doctor would tell you NOT to read about the SEs (side effects). Many first time posters went 'AAAAAHHHH, I'm afraid to even try it', but that is why I mentioned - we don't know how many people are fine and fabulous on it because they would have no reason to even search the internet for other people with SEs.

Well, if Effexor really does help hot flashes, you have informed all of the people reading this site - cause nobody knew that before, that I know of anyway.

Please update on your progress. Yankeegirl

Psychic Dreams?

Has anyone had precognitive dreams or noticed more "sensitivity" on effexor?

Since starting on 75mg about 2 months ago, my dreams are wonderfully rich, vivid and positive (for a change) and several have announced events that have gone on to happen. I'm curious if the drug is doing this, or if feeling better is permitting me to experience more sensitivity.

any comments welcome.

thanks.

Hi,

MANY posters have said they have more interesting, vivid dreams that they really enjoy. I think only one person from past postings had nightmares. A lot of people say they miss the dreams when they go off Effexor.

Noone has said anything about being psychic though. The posts I read were from the beginning in 1999 and since May 2003, probably 1,000 I've read. I did read in a Newsweek cover article about dreams that, they are not so much about something that you have to figure out like Freud believed, but people have to sleep so your brain can heal itself and it goes to all the connections and does repairs, which is why sleep deprivation is a torture, because your brain has not healed from what has happened each day. I guess it makes sense that dreams can be so wierd because all the different memories at the sites being healed are all lumped together in a dream? I'm guessing...

I particularly liked the Effexor dream I had where Bruce Willis was trying to convince me to date him! Hee hee. Yankeegirl

Thanks for the info about Effexor being effective for menopause---my psychiatrist prescribed it primarily for depression, but I am finding it indicated for migraines and now menopause as well. Makes me feel better about taking such a high dose (375). You might also try black cohosh, found in Remifemin (over the counter) for your hot flashes. It has really helped me!

This is my 4th day on Effexor, 75mg. I am not depressed, but had a hysterectomy when I was 24 and have really bad hot flashes from it. I was on Celexa for the hot flashes, but it stopped working so I was switched to Effexor. I was wondering if anyone else is taking it for his reason?

Dear Christie:
I Had a hysterectomy at age 42 and was also put on effexor 37.5 mg once a day for the hot flashes and depression and a few other unfavorable menopausal symptoms!!!!!!! It's only been my fifth day so it's still early to know at this point. However, a cousin of mine takes it for hot flashes and she said it was a miracle and she is very happy as to the results!!Good luck ans let me know...:)

You didn't notice a smoother day? I did. On 37.5 I seemed to be just about to the point of feeling "smooth" but not quite there. The second day I was on 75 I felt much better waking and going to bed. It seemed at 37.5 the med was worn off by morning and late night. Also side effects such as slight irriatable bowel diminished after going to 75. I was on 37.5 three weeks before I made the jump not because of side effects but wanting to see if I could just stay at 37.5, but after that amount of time I figured it was worth a try at 75, I could always go back down if there was a problem. So far so good on 75mg Effexor XR!

I went to a psychiatrist because I have developed a phobia for flying on planes. I am not depressed but I am generally anxious and have a family history of anxiety. The Dr. gave me an Effexor XR starter kit but I was very apprehensive... I took the first dose and I now my feelings of hesitation were confirmed..the drug made me very agitated (I stayed in my bedroom away from my husband so I would not start to quarrel with him) and I very tired (almost sedated). Is this normal? I read the drug information but it was not helpful. I do not feel comfortable taking the second dose..

Thanks!

I too am very tired on the effexor xr. Mainly durning the day and then cant sleep at all at night. I am going on week 3 and now on 75mg. I was very cranky while I was on 37.5 but since I have uped to 75mg I seem to be leveling off a bit the last few days. I hear it gets better. I was very nervous about taking this product because of the effects also because I am not one that likes to take meds. As a matter a fact, I almost did not continue after the first few doses. I am kinda glad I continued.....I can tell now around night time, the med seems to be wearing off (since I switched to taking it @ night so I could sleep better). Seems to be working now...at first couldnt really tell that it did anything except made me cranky, not sleep & shakey. Hang in there a bit longer.....it may be worth it.

I was "agitated" too my first couple days on Effexor. It was very much like what I experience from too much caffeine all the way down to the sinus headache. It went away pretty quickly though.

this is a copy of a post i just left you over at Social too...

i know Cher has written you already over on Social... When this all suddenly got upended on Friday night and our posts were getting redirected all over the place, i left you and Willie a post on this site to tell you how to find us, but i don't know if that post is even still here... If you feel like 'catching up' and you've gotten the drift of how the Social site works, on the "master page" at the top you'd have to enter the archived posts for the week of 7/19 (seems that each Saturday that shelve the previous week's posts and start over) and there's a thread called something like 'Controlling men and pleasers' which says it was sent by Dr. Bob but it's really all of our posts inside his post that he redirected over their in his name ... It's very different the way it works there. And indeed it caught us so off guard and RIGHT in the middle of an intense thread of personal sharings, having no idea we weren't supposed to be doing that ... so we just found each other by e-mail and have written like crazy over the weekend (well, i sort of) ... Anyway, we'd love to have you write to Cher's address in her post and join us if you're interested, as an alternative, regardless of what we wind up doing ... In any event we can no longer have a one-site-serves-all kind of place for dealing with our meds and "issues" too ...

Gosh you went to 300! and i went to 150 last week (and frankly i'm going through an expectation-letdown cuz my energy level still sucks)! i'm dying to hear more about what changes you're feeling ...

I come back to Pyscho-B this morning & see a Big-Old Welcome Back Kim! Made my morning. Thank you.

Ok, at 200mg, I was cruising along, stabilized, fewer Side Effects, and noticeably not so "AWARE" of taking Effexor. As long as I was eating healthy, getting enough sleep at night (very important) and generally taking care of myself (not pushing my limits of endurance), then I was feeling good. (I have to watch myself on trying too hard to catch up on all my *should haves*.) I had energy in the morning and afternoon. But since upping to the higher dosage, I'm mired back in SE's again. I'll re-evaluate in a week or so.

How's your experience going since upping to 150?

hi Kim!

You mentioned in another post that you are feeling "jittery" ... You mean throughout your body? What other SE's are you experiencing now, if you don't mind describing - when you have a chance. Are they the same ones you felt when you first went to 200 or other lower levels too? How long had you been at 200?

And another question i've really been curious about: Do you have any idea how to compare your levels with XR levels? Is 300 for you the same as 300 XR in terms of potency, just that the timing of release is different? And does 300 for you mean 150 twice a day?

I actually haven't had a resurgence of side effects like at lower levels -- and this was my biggest single jump to date by far -- from 100 to 150. But i had heard so much about 150 being such a turning-point level for the norepinephrine effects kicking in (actually only one poster said that in terms of it being a sort of "rule" -- which i realize now he was overstating, or else maybe it'll turn out that Effexor just doesn't work for me which would seem very disappointing... but the expectation stuck with me and also a couple of others said that they'd had sudden energy too at 150, i've asked for confirmation of that from Dr. Bob and others but no one has been willing to answer my Q) and so i was left with a kind of expectation and hopefulness of finally having a real turnaround in energy levels, but alas so far NADA and it's been a week now.

My SE's are the ones like sweating that started happening at i think 37.5 and have never really stopped. I also fall asleep earlier than i used to (meaning by midnight now) but i also wake up earlier -- i'm grateful now when i sleep until almost 7 am ... Waking at 5 am last Friday and Saturday had me a zombie of sorts by Sat/Sun... Also my appetite is way down but i'm not losing weight -- 10 pounds that i gained last fall normally would have been gone eating less the way i am on Effexor but they're still there. I think i had one day last week of feeling some weird head sensation return, the day after going to 150, but it only lasted one day unlike at some lower levels. That was a positive surprise, but i'm just craving energy, so desperately, that it's a real disappointment that 150 hasn't been a turning point as it has been for others...

I'd love to hear more about how you're doing, but meanwhile send empathy for the SE process and understand if you don't feel like writing much...

hugs,
zinya

Hey Zinya,

>You mentioned in another post that you are feeling "jittery"

Yep, my legs are doing their thing again. I'm bouncing them again when I'm sitting down. My fingers drum the desk. I've always thought that I might have ADHD like my son. Effexor might be making that worse, I dunno. It's a livable SE, bothers others more than me <grin>, and maybe I'm burning more calories.

>What other SE's are you experiencing now, if you don't mind describing?

Constipation, big-time. I can't tell if I'm gaining weight, pregnant, or just need a full basket of bran muffins. Some sweats too <new one>. Keep thinking I'm coming down with something. Nervous habits increasing; such as biting nails, picking at things (zits, bugbites, hangnails, etc.). And I keep checking to see if I turned the curling iron off in the morning. I'm so distracted that I can't remember. More memory problems.

>Do you have any idea how to compare your levels with XR levels?

I believe 300mg XR is stronger than 300mg Non-XR. Because of Absorption perhaps, more lost in the Non-XR version. I don't know the ratio of strength comparison.

>How long had you been at 200?

From 1-1.5 months.

>And does 300 for you mean 150 twice a day?

I'm supposed to be taking 100mg 3x daily. But I take 200mg in the morning and 100mg at 2 pm. My highest stressors are at work.

> I'd love to hear more about how you're doing, but meanwhile send empathy for the SE process and understand if you don't feel like writing much...

I used to have to function going through alcohol withdrawal or hangover at work. Effexor SE's are still a breeze for me. :)

Jaw tension? Grinding teeth(bruxism)? I suffered through that as well, yet again, as I increased from 200mg Non-XR to 300mg Non-XR. I'm hoping it'll go away like it did before.

I am on effexor and despite the trial recommendations took about 6 weeks to wean myself off it. I then had a cheery 2 weeks of feeling normal then out of the blue felt ratty but if you can understand I could see I was being ratty without actually being swallowed up in it. I work in law and told my secretary to take the client calls as I knew I would lose it when they complained about trivial things but other than that I felt completely calm, it was wierd. Suddenly after 2 weeks of taking no tablets at all I started sleepwalking. I have an ensuite but sadly according to my eldest daughter kept walking in the middle of the night to our spare room and weeing. My God how embarrassing. I have never in my life sleepwalked and this has scared me. My doctor did not really understand and simply suggested that I should come off the tabs slower and so I am on a reduced dose for the next three months and then it will be reduced again. But I am not overly happy with this as there are a number of other wierd symptoms I keep suffering. I have the most wierd feeling in my head when I miss a tablet, sort of spacey but nothing like I have felt before - like someone in the far distance, very far distance trampling on rice krispies! I also seem to have bowel movements far more than I had before, seveal times a day and much to my distress am putting on weight despite one of the side effects apparently being loss of weight. Has anyone else experienced any of these things especially the sleepwalking which is really scaring me.

You poor thing,
I have had sleepwalking incidents recently while being on effexor. However, I've sleepwalked before, beginning in childhood. Mostly during times of extreme stress. I sleepwalk, sleeptalk. Heck, I've even used a boyfriend's leather shoe as a water bowl for his pets and tried to climb out a window while sleeping. THAT was embarrassing.

I don't have any advice. I'm helpless against the sleepwalking episodes. I do wish you luck.
