> Emotions and sadness are not going to go away, everyone has issues to be dealt with in life and they have reactions to them. Knowing if your AD is working for you is a matter of degree. How stable do you feel? Can you cope with situations and the emotions you are feeling fairly well, or do they seem overwhelming? Has your overall impression of life changed from a concept that it is chaotic and hopeless to the perception that it can be dealt with and managed? What kind of side effects are you experiencing? Do they seem worse than the depression, etc. or do you think you can live with them? It can get better than just no longer feeling suicidal, but you could experience dreadful side effects in trying to get there. How much are you willing to risk to become more stable than you are now? Your answers to any of these questions could tell you much about how well your AD is working for you currently. Are you in control of your life or are your emotions controlling you and ruining your life? Meds can be a great tool in giving you back control over your own decisions and reactions so that you can cope more effectively with any number of difficult situations in your life.

Zion, thanks, this was helpful as far as putting somewhat measurable elements to the question of "is this working". For me, the problem is that now that I am off the Effexor, I can function pretty "normally", or at least what seems to be to be normal. But in the past I would be doing fine and then suddenly, wham, apparently out of nowhere I became totally depressed, woudl cry for hours and feel all is hopeless. The Effexor eliminated the deep plunges though I did have lots of smaller dips...more like generalized sadness than total despare. I don't want to take another AD because I'll bet I will have similarly unpleasant side effects no matter which I try but I am fearful of another plunge. I feel a bit like I am walking on eggshells, afraid to think for a minute about things that disturb me. I know this can't go on like this and I have an appt with a shrink in a week. I hope she will be able to give me insight on whether or not I need to be on something. For now I am grateful that I do still have moments of pleasure and happiness though I try not to examine anything too closely for fear it will send me off in the wrong direction. I feel for those of you who are feeling so low and don't have even the occasional up moments.
P.S. Would still love to chat "live" but I need specific directions on where to go.

Shanti, Same here. There's a link to the site but I've lost it. Perhaps we could email Dr. Bob?

By the way, your post last Thursday was really great. I was going to respond, but got sick with bronchitis about that time--no energy for anything. Talk at you soon,

Jeez, I feel like such a lame-o but ok, I go to the bottom of the page and I look for links....which link exactly? I found Psycho-babble Open; is that what I want? When I click on that I get lots more info and I did sign up, but how do I find the chat room? Please forgive my lack of knowledge in this arena. If this doesn't work, we could try using Yahoo chat and just create a new room. Any assistance anyone can provide would be appreciated. Thanks!

So, Dr. Bob, if you're watching, I'm the same Jannbeau, but I have to start doing this from home since it takes too much time at work.

NOW, with that behind us, Let's see if we can get to Psychosocial Babble. Just go to the bottom of the Psycho-Babble page and click on Psycho-social Babble. That will take you right to the psychosocial (PS) page. Scroll on down and you will find the posts.

I will start a new thread right now and just call it "SHANTI"--lets see if we can all get onto the same page this way. If you can make your way to the PS page, then just look for "SHANTI"--Hey, hey, hey!!!

Cheers, hope to see y'all there!

I was confused and thought we were trying to get to a chat room and not just another place to post messages. I'd prefer a more interactive way to communicate so maybe using Yahoo chat would work better. I think we can even set up our own user room. I tried to do so the other night but my computer froze up! Thanks for being patient with us Dr Bob while we get this going.

If you've already joined Psycho-Babble Open (which is a different process than registering here), then you should be able just to go to:

Some of us girls set up a sort of e-mail club. We write each other and send "carbon-copies" to the others in our group. We're enjoying getting to know each other and learning to cope with our "illnesses". If you want to join in please write to me at SueDoeN@aol.com I'll be gone for about a week, but then I'll be back.
hope to hear from you.

I am new at this and Effexor XR

In reply to Anyone had success on Effexor XR? , posted by jp on October 24, 1999, at 14:59:14

I began Effexor XR for depression and anxiety about a month and a week ago...currently I am on the 75mg/day dose. In the beginning I definitely noticed increased energy, less depression and less anxiety, however, recently these have been less noticeable. I feel tired again and anxious. Do you think I may be in need of a dose increase or is this the pattern? And am I doing this posting stuff right?
Thanks.

Valenphy, I had similar concerns. At first I felt great on Effexor and had no significant negative side effects. However, after about a month or so I noticed increased fatigue, significant weight gain, weird dreams, and difficulty sleeping deeply. My depression still seemed to be in check so I never increased my dosage. I finally decided it wasn't worth it so I went off. But what you describe is similar to my experience in that all seemed well in the beginning, then the honeymoon ended.

Valenphy,
I started effexor xr 2 years ago and went up to 150 mg about a year in. Untill just recently I thought everything was ok. I developed a rash, headaches etc. I also noticed it didn't seem to be doing the things it was supposed to. I am having trouble sleeping and weird dreams when I do sleep. From all I've read, when the side effects start(after the initial) they don't go away. I finally gave up. Keep reading some of the other posts before you decide, you might want to try the higher dose. Good luck.
Lolly
