"The worst thing is being at other peoples mercy."

I completely concur with you in this sentiment. I have been at others' mercy (due to my brain chemistry and/or mother's inflicting her codependency and mental illness down my throat). I will never be able to be happy and/or live in a state of true forgiveness until I have control over my life, or, failing that, my anxiety and depression. My "will to power" (to borrow a term from Nietzsche) has been completely compromised. Without the ability to feel competency and lack of being-encomposing worry, I am nothing, a non-entity. People push me around at their will and do not even realize it. I hate it and there's nothing I can do about it. Who is not a misanthrope when human contact means little more than a shove in the back or a kick in the face. I am right there with you, brother.

Chris
