I guess it's natural for relationships with dogs to differ, just as relationships with humans do. I have a dog now that is very similar to the one I miss so. He is faithful and loving and much of what she was, and I do love him dearly. But I suppose it's equivalent to the human love of being in love as opposed to loving. There have been a very few dogs in my life who I've been in love with, in the doggie equivalent of the phrase.
It's not just that they loved me, or listened to me. It is an ineffable "something".
They are the dogs who not only made me happy, but brought me joy. Not just from what they did, but from who they were. Maybe they all had some quality of joyousness themselves, and it touched a chord in me, filled some sort of lack in me.
